Talking about the Past So far we have learned to talk about events in the past that clear beginnings and endings. This is called the Past Preterite. e.g., Él habló conmigo. (He spoke to me.)

Talking about the Past Isolated Event in the Past with a clear start and finish Ongoing or habitual Event in the Past without clear start or finish

Past Preterite: Isolated Event in the Past e.g., Yo toqué la guitarra ayer. I played the guitar yesterday. Tú hablaste con ella el viernes pasado. You spoke to her last Friday. Past Imperfect: Ongoing or Habitual Event in the Past e.g., Yo tocaba la guitarra por muchos años. I played the guitar for many years. Tú hablabas con ella todos los días. You spoke to her every day.

Past Imperfect –ar verb endings: Yo -aba Tú -abas Usted -aba Ella -aba Él -aba Nosotros -ábamos Ustedes -aban Ellos -aban
