3 2 ¿En inglés o en español? In English you can say: I am working right now or I am working tomorrow *** In Spanish you cannot do this. The progressive in Spanish is ONLY used to describe an action that is in process at the moment we are talking (ahora mismo), or used to talk about what was happening when telling a story (estar in the imperfect tense). *** In Spanish we can use the expression IR + A + Infinitive to refer to the near future (tomorrow). Estoy trabajando ahora mismo. Estaba trabajando ayer cuando... Voy a trabajar mañana.

4 3 In English you would never say: “He walking.” or “She working.” You say: He’s walking. or He is walking. She’s working. or She is working. ESTAR + -ando or -iendo El Presente Progresivo We do the same in Spanish: Never leave out the verb ESTAR verb stem

5 4 To form the present progressive in Spanish: ESTAR + verb stem + -ando (ar verbs) or -iendo (er/ir verbs) (bailar) Yo estoy bailando (comer) Ella está comiendo (caminar) Tú estás caminando (escribir) Ellos están escribiendo (escuchar) Nosotros estamos escuchando Remember, the stem of the verb is what is left when you take off the –ar, -er, -ir verb ending. Ex. bailar  bail

14 13Ejemplos…: 1)Yo me estoy despertando/estoy despertándome. (despertarse) 2)Amalia se está lavando/está lavándose la cara. (lavarse) 3)Tú te estás poniendo/estás poniéndote perfume. (ponerse) When the verb is reflexive, the me, te, se, nos goes BEFORE the verb ESTAR or AFTER the -NDO.

(ponerse)  Me estoy lavando/estoy lavándome la cara. Te estás despertando/estás despertándote. (Nosotros) nos estamos poniendo/estamos poniéndonos perfume.

16 15Ejemplos…: When you are telling a story in the past, and you want to say you were doing something, you use the imperfect tense: estaba, estabas, estaba, estábamos, estaban. pasado yo estaba tú estabas él, ella, Ud. estaba nosotros estábamos ellos, ellas, Uds. estaban + -ando -iendo He was walking. (caminar) Él estaba caminando...
