Preterite vs Imperfect Talks about the past “Completed” actions in the past What you used to do What you were like How old you were What time it was

Preterite vs Imperfect When talking about the past, an action in progress can often be interrupted by some event. In that situation the imperfect expresses the action in progress and the preterite expresses the interrupting event. Regresábamos a casa cuando empezó a llover We were returning home when it began to rain

Preterite vs Impefect The impefect also describes the conditions surrounding a particular event: the way things were, what was going on, and the way people felt. Hacía frío y había niebla cuando el accidente ocurrió It was cold and it was foggy when the accident occurred

Preterite vs Impefect to tell a Story When telling a story, use both the preterite and imperfect tenses Use the imperfect tense to set the scene by telling what was going on and to describe people, places, moods, and situations Un día en que había mucha niebla One day when it was very foggy

Cont’d When you’re ready to tell something that happened in the story, use an expression such as: un día, de repente, or fue cuando plus a verb in the preterite Continue your story with expressions like: entonces, luego, and después plus the preterite End the story with the preterite to tell how things came out: y todos vivieron felizmente
