3 Conjugation! 103 We know how to conjugate verbs to say what is going on now—in the present tense To conjugate a regular verb: Drop the ending (-ar, -er, or -ir) Choose a present tense ending depending on who the subject is: -ar verbs -er verbs -ir verbs -o -amos -emos -imos -as -áis -es -éis -ís -a -an -e -en

4 Talking about what happened in the past
103 In Spanish, you show who does an action by how you conjugate it; you choose the verb ending depending on who the subject is. I want to say “I speak,” so… You also show when they did the action by how you conjugate it; there are different sets of endings for saying when someone did something… ¡Hablo!

5 Preterito (Past Tense) Endings
103 To conjugate verbs in the past tense: Drop the ending (-ar, -er, or -ir) Choose a preterite ending depending on who the subject is: I want to say “I spoke,” so… -ar verbs -er verbs -ir verbs -é -amos -í -imos -aste -asteis -iste -isteis -ó -aron -ió -ieron ¡Hablé!

7 Preterite of ir (to go) 103 Irregular verbs—of course—have irregular preterite forms, as well. Ir (to go) is conjugated the following way: Present Tense Past Tense voy vamos fui fuimos vas vais fuiste fuisteis va van fue fueron Voy al centro comercial. = I am going to the mall. Fui al centro comercial. = I went to the mall.

8 Preterite of hacer (to do/to make)
103 Hacer (to do/to make) is conjugated the following way: Present Tense Past Tense hago hacemos hice hicimos haces hacéis hiciste hicisteis hace hacen hizo hicieron Hago la tarea. = I am doing my homework. Hice la tarea anoche. = I did my homework last night.

103 In the preterite, verbs that end in –car, -gar, or –zar have irregular yo forms. Recall what the preterite endings are for –ar verbs: Preterite Endings: regular –ar verbs -é -amos -aste -asteis -ó -aron
