How can you help your child succeed?  Reading  Make sure they read 30 minutes minimum a night. (No distractions).  Read with them.  Ask them what their book is (or was) about.  Model read.  Read to your child.  If you want, try to talk to them about our strategies or skills.

¿Cómo pueden ayudar a su hijo a tener éxito en la escuela?  Lectura  Asegúrense de que lean un mínimo de 30min. cada noche. (sin distracciones)  Lean con ellos.  Pregúntenles de que se trató un libro.  Lean ustedes como ejemplo.  Léanle un libro a su hijo.  Si quieren, traten de hablar con ellos acerca de las estrategias que estamos aprendiendo.

How can you help your child succeed?  Writing  Talk to them about how writing is important in your life.  Optional: Have them write stories for you, keep a journal, or you could have them write to you what their book was about (not recommended for every book).  Tell stories to each other.  Keep them reading!!!!!!!!!!!

¿Cómo pueden ayudar a su hijo a tener éxito en la escuela?  Escritura  Háblenles de porque es importante en su vida la escritura.  Opcional: Ustedes pueden encargarles de que escriban historias en la casa, que lleven un diario, o pueden escribirles de que se trató su libro. (no se lo recomiendo que haga eso muy seguida)  Cuéntenles historias y cuentos antes de acostar.  Que sigan leyendo!!!!!!!!!!!

How can you help your child succeed?  Math  I will be sending home tips in the newsletter for how to support the students at home in a particular subject.  Have them practice computation and flash cards with you (about minutes per week) or until you are convinced they have mastered the skill.  Show them how you use math in your everyday life and at your work.  Have them do the real life math.  Figure out money/change, time questions, a simple budget, measurements, estimates, etc.

¿Cómo pueden ayudar a su hijo a tener éxito en la escuela?  Matemáticas  Voy a mandar consejos en mi “periódico” para ayudar con cada unidad.  Que practiquen sus tablas y computación básica por un promedio de minutos por semana  Muéstrenles como usan la matemáticas en su vida y en su trabajo.  Hagan que ellos usen matemáticas para problemas cotidianos  Usar dinero, problemas de tiempo, medir, etc.

How can you help your child succeed?  Science and Social Studies:  Look for community opportunities to learn more about our topics.  Check out books about our topics (or any science or social studies theme that interests your son/daughter) from the public library.  Visit museums.  Go on “family field trips”

¿Cómo pueden ayudar a su hijo a tener éxito en la escuela?  Ciencia y ciencias naturales  Busquen oportunidades en la comunidad para aprender más acerca de nuestros temas.  Sacar libros de la biblioteca pública acerca de ciencias y ciencias naturales.  Visiten museos.  Vayan de “excursión familiar.”

How can you help your child succeed?  In general  Read the newsletters  Make sure your child attends regularly.  Ask questions  Keep communication open with school and teacher.  Ask your son/daughter what they learned at school today.  DON’T TAKE “NOTHING” FOR AN ANSWER.

All About Me  My background  Grew up in Colorado (Aurora)  Undergraduate CSU---Honors Program with Spanish and Education.  Studied abroad—Puebla, Mexico  How did I really learn Spanish?  Master’s Degree UNC---Bilingual Education and English as a Second Language  7 th year teaching at Irish Elementary.

¿Quién soy yo?  Mi historia  Crecí en Colorado (Aurora)  La Universidad de CSU. Estudié español y educación.  Estudié en el extranjero-- Puebla, México  ¿Cómo aprendí de veras el español?  La maestría en UNC— Concentración en la educación bilingüe y inglés como segundo idioma.  7 años enseñando en Irish.

Classroom Community  Our classroom is a community. In our community, we have rules to help us get along with each other.  Our class rules are the Irish I’s  We work in groups and are respectful, responsible, and hard working.  Class meetings

Nuestra comunidad  Nuestro salón es una comunidad y tenemos reglas que hay que seguir para mantener a nuestra comunidad sana.  Las reglas del salón son iguales que para toda la escuela.  Trabajamos en grupo. Somos respetuosos, responsables y trabajamos duro.  Juntas del salón

Homework  I will assign about 50 minutes of homework every night. This does not include the minimum of 30 minutes of reading.  Spelling will be turned in on Friday, but checked daily. All other homework is to be turned in first thing in the morning.  Pink Slip  Homework not completed is completed at Recess or Lunch time.

Field Trips  We have lots of fun field trips planned for this year!  We will attend V. Smith Mountain park to learn about life zones. (September)  We will be going to CSU for a math and science day. (October)  We will be going to the Denver Capital Building (January)  “May Mayhem”
