¿Sabìas que…? In 1502, Columbus landed on the shores of Costa Rica and gave it the name “Rich Coast.” In 1821, the central American provinces, including Costa Rica, declared their independence from Spain. Throughout the 19 th and 20 th centuries, Costa Rica maintained a peaceful democracy, only entering twice into war. In 1949, the country chose to abolish its standing army and has since enjoyed political stability, peace, and economic progress.

There are over 60 volcanoes in Costa Rica, 8 of them active. Puerto Limòn- where Columbus first set foot in 1502, is the country’s only deep-water port on the Atlantic Coast. It is principally a port for loading Costa Rica’s numerous exports.

¿Sabìas que…? Puerto Limòn- located on the Carribean coast, is only 188 miles from Puntarenas, which is located on the country’s Pacific coast. Education- is compulsory and free, helping Costa Rica achieve the highest literacy rate (95%) in Latin America. El Teatro Nacional- built in 1897 in San Josè, is recognized for its superb architecture.

Bananas Costa Rica is one of the largest banana producers in the world. Bananas comprise 1/5 of the country’s exports. During the 19 th century, thousands of workers were brought to Costa Rica from Jamaica to work in the banana plantations on the Caribbean coast. Today both the Pacific and the Caribbean coasts have been cleared for banana plantations. In 1994, income from tourism exceeded that of banana exports for the first time in Costa Rican history. ¿Por què?
