2 Las Diferencias Both the preterit and the imperfect are used to talk about the past How do we know which one to use? These are the rules… (and we will learn motions to remember each one)

3 El Imperfecto 1) En Progreso –Ella cantaba mientras trabajaba. –She was singing while she was working. –If the action was in progress of occurring when you tell the story, it fits in this category –Key word: mientras (while)

4 El Imperfecto 2) Habitual, Repetida –Ellos siempre caminaban a la escuela. –They always used to walk to school. –They used to walk to school. –If an action occurred more than once, it fits in this category.

5 Key Words for #2 The following all imply that the action happened multiple times: –Siempre –Todos los días –Cada –A veces –De vez en cuando –Con frecuencia –A menudo = often If you see one of these, you will probably use the imperfect

6 El Imperfecto 3) Pinta Descripción –E–Era un día hermoso. –I–It was a beautiful day. –I–If you are describing something, it fits in the category. (ex. weather, time)

7 4) Mental, Emoción –Queríamos ir a la playa. –We wanted to go to the beach. –An emotion, mental state, or desire fall into this category.
