Buenas tardes, bienvenidos a la presentación de los proyectos de los alumnos del programa Advanced Placement de Cálculo. Es para nosotros un gran honor contar con su presencia. Good afternoon, welcome to the presentations of our Advanced Placement math student’s projects. It is a great honor for us to have you present here today. We thank all of you for coming. Estamos reunidos hoy, para dar a conocer los resultados del gran esfuerzo que hemos puesto en la elaboración de los primeros proyectos sobre modelaciones matemáticas, sobre escenarios del espacio que serán enviados a la NASA como apoyo educativo y futuras referencias bibliográficas. We are here today to unveil the results of the immeasurable effort we students have put forth into the elaboration of this complex mathematical model on Space scenarios that will be sent to the NASA as educative support as well as future references for others.

Cabe destacar que estos escenarios son ajenos al programa académico de Cálculo del Tec y que tienen como objetivo principal crear nuevas oportunidades de aprendizaje y nexos para las próximas generaciones de estudiantes, con la NASA. It is important to mention that these projects are not part of the Tec’s Calculus program. Their primary objective is to promote learning in new and more complex ways as well as to create a relationship with the NASA to help our successors in this class.

We are a group of students that are dedicated to obtaining an integral, ethical, and humanistic formation. Also as a group, we are interested in this important science, Mathematics. We are interested in its application to real life problems. Due to this fact we are all members of this group, Advanced Placement Calculus. ¿Quiénes somos? Somos un grupo de alumnos en busca de una formación íntegra, ética y humanística. Además, como grupo, compartimos el gusto por las Matemáticas y estamos interesados en la aplicación de esta ciencia en la vida diaria. Por esta razón decidimos involucrarnos al programa de Cálculo Advanced Placement o mejor conocido como AP. Who are we?

Este es un programa que tiene millones de estudiantes en las preparatorias de mayor reconocimiento en el mundo. Dentro de nuestra comunidad el programa AP requiere de esfuerzos colaborativos entre maestros dedicados y estudiantes talentosos. ¿Quiénes somos?Who are we? This program has many students in some of the best schools in the world. For this class to be a success it is required that the very talented students as well as our quite qualified teachers give our bests collaborative efforts.

¿Qué hacemos? Como complemento al programa AP en el cual aprendemos Matemáticas a través de la solución de problemas y donde además cuestionamos el origen de las fórmulas que aplicamos, nuestra maestra Gloria, nos ha invitado a participar en la elaboración de modelos matemáticos de situaciones reales que requieren la aplicación de conocimientos y habilidades lógico-matemáticos que hemos adquirido, a este tipo de modelo educativo se le llama Problem Based Learning, o mejor conocido como PBL, que es precisamente la manera en que presentamos y realizamos los proyectos.

What do we do? Along with our extensive work plan in the AP course we also have been invited to take part in more advanced problem solving that involves real life situations which also indicates life size problems. This method of learning is an addition to our regular course that teaches integral calculus and a slightly deeper questioning of the origin of this science. This method is called Problem Based Learning or PBL.

Es así que gracias a la recomendación que el doctor Jim Botti, senior Educational Consultant y Institutional Designer for the NASA Classroom of the Future hace de nuestra maestra Gloria Faus a la doctora Barbara Maggi, miembro del Center for Atmospheric Sciences of the Hampton University quién invita a Gloria a participar en el programa AIM. ¿Qué hacemos?What we do? Thanks to the recommendation from the recognized Doctor Jim Botti, senior Educational Consultant and Institutional Designer for the NASA Classroom of the Future, of our teacher Gloria Faus to Doctor Barbara Maggi, an important member of the Center for Atmospheric Sciences of the Hampton University, our teacher Gloria Faus was consequentially invited to participate in the AIM project.

El programa AIM o Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere, es un taller en educación en Alaska, el cual está conformado por presentaciones de diversas técnicas didácticas, investigación científica, actividades de aplicación para prácticas docentes en el aula, herramientas para el diseño de actividades, PBL y presentaciones de investigación de campo. AIM which stands for Aeronomy of Ice in The Mesosphere, is a workshop for education in Alaska. It entails varied presentations on didactic techniques, scientific investigation, Application activities to be used in the classroom, Tools for the designing of activities, problem based learning as well as field work presentations. Dentro de las investigaciones propuestas por el programa AIM, se encuentra la que trata sobre las nubes noctilucentes. Las nubes noctilucentes, son un fenómeno relativamente nuevo. Estas nubes se encuentran a una altura de 80 km y están compuestas principalmente de hielo. Existen varias teorías sobre el origen de estas nubes, una de ellas sugiere que las nubes noctilucentes aparecen a partir de la explosión del volcán Krakatoa. Sin embargo, la teoría más reciente y la más aceptada, es la que propone que estas nubes son una consecuencia del calentamiento global. Nubes Noctilucentes

Noctilucent Clouds One of the projects involved in the AIM program is that concerning Noctilucent clouds. This is a relatively new phenomenon. These clouds are located over 80 km high in the atmosphere and are mainly constituted by ice. There are several theories as to where these clouds come from. One of these theories, although not the only or most fundamental one, is that they where created by the explosion of the Krakatoa Volcano. A newer and more supported theory is that these clouds are a result of global warming.
