2 Subject Pronouns Subject pronouns take the place of a subject so that you do not have to keep repeating the subject over and over again. For example: Rosa vive en Ecuador. Rosa es una estudiante. Rosa es de Peru. Or, you could use a subject pronoun to replace Rosa so that you do not have to keep repeating her name. Rosa vive en Ecuador. Ella es una estudiante. Ella es de Peru.

4 o The first person singular pronoun “YO” o “Yo” means “I” and is used in the same way as in English. o Note that it is not capitalized unless it starts a sentence: Subject pronouns (Los pronombres) Yo soy americano. Yo soy estudiante I am American I am a student Mi amigo y yo somos de Venezuela. My friend and I are from Venezuela.

5 o In Spanish there are two ways to say “you” (singular). o Use tú when addressing a friend, a family member, or a child you know well. o Use usted to address a person with whom you have a formal relationship, do not know or have a more distant relationship, such as a superior at work, a professor, or an older person. o Although subject pronouns are often left out, the pronoun usted is commonly stated when addressing someone to show respect.
