What does ‘Prehistoric’ Mean? “Prehistoric” means “before history. Later we will discuss when “History” begins, but we will now discuss how the human species evolved to the point where History begins.

The Stone Age / Paleolithic Era Archaeologists think that early humans lived about 2,500,000 years ago in Africa. This is called “the Stone Age” because humans made tools and weapons from stone. These early humans were hunters and gatherers. They hunted animals and gathered seeds, fruit, and plants for food. Later, they learned how to make fire.

We are all Homo Sapiens The majority of anthropologists agree that our species evolved in Africa and first began to migrate into Asia and Europe between 125,000 and 60,000 years BCE (Before the Common Era). Our Homo Sapiens ancestors displaced and perhaps absorbed earlier and more primitive Hominid species such as Homo Erectus and the Neanderthals.

Prehistoric Art One significant difference between Homo Sapiens and other Hominids is that our species began creating cave art, and later all kinds of artistic expression. This signified the capacity for abstract expression that other Hominids possibly lacked.

Who is an “Archaeologist?” Archaeologists study the human past using the material remains of ancient people and cultures. Archaeologists do all of these things: Artifact Excavation Analyzing Artifacts Excavating human remains Analyzing human remains Analyzing ancient cities Publishing discoveries

The Ice Age La Época de Hielo Near the end of the stone age, the climate of the world changed and became much colder. The “Ice Age,” as this time is called, lasted a very long time—from about 2,000,000 to about 15,000 years ago. Glaciers covered much of the earth. It was very cold. Early humans had to adapt to the cold. They had to protect themselves from freezing. During the Ice Age, the first humans followed the animals they hunted. As the earth warmed, Ice Age ended.

Race, Ethnicity, Language The different wandering groups of Homo Sapiens were isolated from each other by vast distances and geography and hence evolved racial, ethnic, cultural and linguistic differences. Most modern anthropologists recognize 3 or 4 major racial – ethnic groupings of Humanity: Los diferentes grupos errantes de Homo Sapiens fueron aislados unos de otros por la geografía y vastas distancias y evolucionaron por lo tanto, las diferencias raciales, étnicas, culturales y lingüísticas. The Beginning of Agriculture El comienzo de la agricultura Early Humans started farming in about 7,000 B.C.E. Instead of moving around to find food, they stayed in one place and stored crops from one season to the next. Early farmers planted crops such as wheat and corn. Because crops needed water to grow, people settled near large rivers. The farmers used water from the rivers to irrigate their crops. They made irrigation canals. The first cities were near these rivers.
