2 TRANSLATIONS, P. 1 A nebulous identity. While it’s all different now, for a long time I felt so distant from that country, Colombia, there in the south…because a lot of time had passed, I hadn’t been there between 14 and 24, 10 very important years in which I was growing/changing/learning…that country… Una identidad nebulosa. While it’s all different now, for a long time I felt so distant from that country, Colombia, allá en el sur…porque había pasado mucho tiempo, yo no había estado allí entre mis 14 y 24 años, 10 años muy importantes en que iba creciendo/cambiando/aprendiendo…es e país…

3 TRANSLATIONS, P. 1  niebla=fog. está nublado=it's cloudy. hay neblina=there is fog.  ¿acaso soy yo la niebla? (am I the fog ?)  Allí en la niebla encuentro preguntas y de hecho esta definición tiene mucho sentido… (There in the fog I find questions, and in fact, this definition makes a lot of sense).

4 TRANSLATIONS, P. 2  ¡hablas muy bien! = you speak really well!  ¿Y qué digo? = And what do I say?

5 TRANSLATIONS, P. 3  (Ya ves, cuento este cuento mucho). (Now you can see, I tell this story a lot)  Tres niñ@s después, (Two daughters and one son later)  Entonces me quedo con esa palabra y con otra:desdibujada. So I’ll stick with that word and with another: vague/blurred/sketchy  Casi que me gusta esta palabra más que todas las otras, porque no tiene una buena traducción: yo tampoco. I almost like this word more than all the rest, because it doesn’t have a good translation: me neither.

6 TRANSLATIONS, P. 3  Al final sé que tengo que seguir intentando traducirme, intentando crear definiciones bien definidas para la gente que se pone incómoda con la niebla, que necesita etiquetas y que intenta ponérmelas  In the end I know I have to keep trying to translate myself, keep trying to create well- defined definitions for the people who become uncomfortable with the fog, who need labels and who try to put them on me

7 TRANSLATIONS, P. 3  Pero yo me quedo con “desdibujada, nebulosa,” porque a veces se me acerca la gente, I won’t name any names, and they ask me what all this means “Hispanic, Latin@, Chican@…” But I’ll stick with “vague/blurred/sketchy, nebulous,” Because sometimes people come up to me, I won’t name any names, and they ask me what all this means “Hispanic, Latin@, Chican@…”

8 TRANSLATIONS, P. 3  y yo siempre digo que lo que es más importante es: el acto de autodefinirse. O sea, ¿cómo te identificas?  Digo yo que desdibujada, nebulosa, ni de aquí, ni de allá, ni de pa’ca y ya está. And I always say that the most important thing is the act of self-definition. Which is to say, how do you identify yourself? I say, vague/blurred/sketchy, nebulous, not from here, not from over there, not from over here, and that’s it.
