What is it? Oddly enough, we use comparatives to compare two things. So far, we’ve learned how to compare things using the phrase “más …. que”, which in English is “more … than…” Let’s review.

Review La clase de español es más aburrida que la clase de historia. Mi libro es más grande que tu libro. Mi familia es más pequeña que tu familia. Las bananas son más sabrosas que las naranjas. Los chicos son más altos que las chicas.

Note The adjectives in the más …. que construction have to match the noun it’s talking about in number and gender. Let’s go back a slide.

Menos…que/Less…than Works the same way as “más… que”, but it means “less…than...” You still have to match the adjective with the noun it’s modifying.

Examples La clase de español es menos aburrida que la clase de historia. Mi libro es menos grande que tu libro. Mi familia es menos pequeña que tu familia. Las bananas son menos sabrosas que las naranjas. Los chicos son menos altos que las chicas.

Mejor/Peor When comparing things that are better are worse, instead of using bueno (bien) or malo (mal), we use mejor and peor.

Examples La clase de español es mejor que (better than) la clase de frances. La clase de frances es peor que (worse than) la clase de español.

Better or worse? For the following slides, say which thing is better, in your opinion, and which is worse. You will be creating two sentences per slide.

La hamburguesa es mejor que el refresco. El refresco es peor que la hamburguesa.

El bistec es mejor que el pollo. El pollo es peor que el bistec.

La clase de historia es mejor que la clase de inglés. La clase de inglés es peor que la clase de historia.

Las papas son mejores que los tomates. Los tomates son peores que las papas.

Older/Younger To talk about someone (or something) being older, we use the word mayor. To talk about someone (or something) being younger, we use the word menor.

Younger or older? For the following slides, say which thing is older and which is younger. You will be creating two sentences per slide.

Your sibling/your father

Mi hermano es menor que mi padre. Mi padre es mayor que mi hermano.

Your father/your mother

Mi padre es menor que mi madre. Mi madre es mayor que mi padre.

Your cousin/your sibling

Mi primo es menor que mi hermano. Mi hermano es mayor que mi primo.

Your grandparents/your parents
