4 Comparatives Me gusta el tenis pero me gusta más el fútbol. Te gustan las manzanas? Si, más o menos.

5 Comparatives We also use más / menos + adjective + que (‘than’) to make comparisons.

6 Más + adjective + que = More + adjective + than or the equivalent of our – er/ier ending added to adjectives in English, prettier better happier smarter

7 Menos + adjective + que = Less + adjective + than Less pretty than Less smart than Less ugly than

8 Comparatives más / menos + adjective + que Los discos compactos de Los Toros son más populares que los discos compactos de Los Lobos.

9 Comparatives más / menos + adjective + que Jorge es menos serio que María.

10 Comparatives The adjectives agree with the nouns they refer to.

11 La lámpara morada es más bonita que la lámpara azul. Notice how bonita agrees with lámpara. If we had been talking about the purple painting it would look like this: El cuadro morado es más bonito que la lámpara azul.

12 Los libros son más pequeños que los cuadernos. Notice how pequeños agrees with libros. It has to be both masculine and plural.

13 La carpeta es menos fea que los cuadernos. Fea agrees with la carpeta not with los cuadernos. La carpeta is known as a false cognate because it looks like the English word for carpet, but it actually means folder.

14 The rug is prettier than the painting. La alfombra es más bonita que el cuadro.

15 My brother is taller than José and Paco. Mi hermano es más alto que José and Paco.

16 Comparatives The adjectives bueno, malo, viejo, and joven have irregular comparative forms. We do not use más with them.

18 Comparatives Mejor, peor, mayor, and menor have plural forms ending in -es. However, they don’t have a different feminine form:

20 Comparatives When used in this sense, mejor and peor have only two forms.

21 Comparatives Graciela y Fabián son mejores que Susana y Gustavo en tenis. Graciela es mejor que Fabián.
