ísimo

Bid Idea  When we describe nouns, we use adjectives. If we want to make an adjective more extreme, we can add the suffix -ísimo to make it even more so.

Práctica  La clase de español es aburrida.  Pero la clase de matemáticas es aburridísima.  Mi hermano es bajo.  Pero tu hermano es ______________.  La comida aquí es agria.  Pero la comida allí es _______________.

Práctica  La clase de español es aburrida.  Pero la clase de matemáticas es aburridísima.  Mi hermano es bajo.  Pero tu hermano es bajísimo.  La comida aquí es agria.  Pero la comida allí es agrísima.

Details  If the last consonant in the adjective is a c, g, or z, we have spelling changes.  Rico – riquísimo  Largo – larguísimo  Feliz – felicísimo

Práctica  Este limón es fresco.  Pero las fresas son ______________________.  Este artículo es vago.  Pero ese artículo es _____________________.

Práctica  Este limón es fresco.  Pero las fresas son fresquísimas.  Este artículo es vago.  Pero ese artículo es vaguísimo.

Extremes  And if you want to make it even more extreme, you can add more and more IS’s to the word.  Paco dice que su esposa es inteligentisisísima.  Yo pienso que Paco es guapisiissísimo.  Ellos son amigos buenisisisisísimos.  (If you’re adding too many IS’s, maybe it’s time to find a more descriptive word!)

Usted / Ustedes Commands

Usted Commands  Usted commands are used to give instructions to strangers or people in authority.  To make an usted command, we follow these steps:  Start with the YO form in the present tense  Drop the O  Switch to the opposite usted ending

Los finales opuestos (opposite endings)  Los verbos –ar usan la letra –e para la forma Usted hablar -> Hable  Los verbos –er/-ir usan la letra –a para la forma Usted comer -> Coma escribir-> Escriba

Práctica  Sing!  Don’t taste the salt!  Tell the truth!  Listen!  Come here!  Don’t look now!

Práctica  Sing!  Don’t taste the salt!  Tell the truth!  Listen!  Come here!  Don’t look now!  ¡Cante!  ¡No pruebe la sal!  ¡Diga la verdad!  ¡Escuche!  ¡Venga aquí!  ¡No mire ahora!

Ustedes Commands  Ustedes commands are used to give instructions to a group of people, like a teacher to a class.  To make an ustedes command, we follow these steps:  Start with the YO form in the present tense  Drop the O  Switch to the opposite ustedes ending

Práctica  Sing!  Don’t taste the salt!  Tell the truth!  Listen!  Come here!  Don’t look now!

Irregular Formal Commands:  These verbs don’t quite follow the pattern because the yo form present tense is irregular. **Remember SIDES  Saber – (yo sé) sepa, sepan  Ir - (yo voy) vaya, vayan  Dar – (yo doy) dé, den  Estar – (yo estoy) esté, estén  Ser – (yo soy) sea, sean

Commands With Pronouns

Big Idea  Often, when we give commands, we use a pronoun as well:  Pass it over here – direct object pronoun (direct objects answer the questions Who? Or What? -> What is being passed? IT)  Tell me the truth – indirect object pronoun (indirect objects answer the questions To whom? Or For whom? To whom is the truth being told? To ME)  Wash yourself before dinner – reflexive pronoun

Negatives w/ Pronouns  If you are telling someone NOT to do something, you put the pronoun in front of the conjugated verb, like you normally would.

Práctica  No me llame Pepita. Mi nombre es Paula.  No nos hablen con esa actitud.  Don’t fall asleep. (usted command)  Don’t listen to her. (ustedes command)

Práctica  Don’t call me Pepita. My name is Paula.  (usted command – direct object pronoun)  Don’t talk to us with that attitude.  (ustedes command – indirect object pronoun)  No se duerma.  (reflexive pronoun)  No la escuchen.  (direct object pronoun)

Affirmatives w/ Pronouns  If you are telling someone to do something, you attach the pronoun to the end of the command.

Práctica  Pásenme los papeles después del examen.  Traígales las invitaciones.  Sing to us, please. (usted command)  Wake up. (ustedes command)

Práctica  Pass the papers to me after the test.  (ustedes command – indirect object pronoun)  Bring them the invitations.  (usted command – indirect object pronoun)  Cántenos, por favor.  (indirect object pronoun)  Despiértense.  (reflexive pronoun)
