2 When would I use negative tú commands? ► When you’re telling your friend, younger sibling, etc. not to do something!

3 How to make the negative tú command? ► You take the ______ command of the verb in the present tense ______ change the ending! ► Changing the ending is a little tricky:  Use the opposite tú ending of the type of verb you have. ► –ar verbs = ► –ir, -er verbs = ‘yo’ and –es -as

4 Examples of negative tú commands ► Hablar in yo form is hablo, drop the ‘o’ and add –es because hablar is a –ar verb.  It would be hables  ¡No hables ► Don’t talk ► Comer (-ir/-er)  como  comas  Jose, por favor no comas rápidamente ► Jose, please don’t eat quickly.

5 Spell changing ► In order to keep pronunciation of some verbs consistent, some verbs require spell changes  Ex. : jugar = juego  no juegues  : tocar = toco  no toques  : empezar = empiezo  no empieces  : poner = pongo  no pongas  : tener = tengo  no tengas

6 Ejemplos: -AR verbs mirar don’t look! escuchar don’t listen! hablar don’t talk! Jugar don’t play! Empezar don’t start! No mires No escuches No hables No juegues No empieces

7 -ER/IR verbs Leer don’t read! Escribir don’t write! Dormir don’t sleep! Oír don’t hear! Comer don’t eat! No leas No escribas No duermas No oigas No comas

8 Irregular negative tu commands Negative tu command Dar Estar Ir Saber Ser No des No estés No vayas No sepas No seas

9 Pronouns ► When you use negative commands IN GENERAL, the pronoun is placed before the verb.  Ex: dejar (-ar)  dejo  dejes ► No me dejes los platos sucios! ► Don’t leave me the dirty dishes!
