1 TOPICS: SABER/CONOCER AND YO-GO VERBS Essential questions: How do I say whom and what I know? How do I use some other irregular verbs?

2 Saber and conocer  Both verbs mean “to know”  Both are regular verbs, except in the “yo” form  Saber: Yo sé, tú sabes, él sabe, nosotros sabemos, ellos saben  Conocer: Yo conozco, tú conoces, él conoce, nosotros conocemos, ellos conocen

3 Conocer  Conocer means “to know,” “to meet” or “to be familiar with”  Knowing people (conocer a _____)  Knowing specific places  Knowing or being familiar with things or ideas  Examples  Yo no conozco a Shakira. I don’t know Shakira.  Quiero conocer a Shakira. I want to MEET Shakira.  ¿Conoces Phoenix? Are you familiar with Phoenix?  Yo conozco muy bien la escuela. I know the school really well.

4 Saber  Saber means “to know” or “to know how to…  It is used for knowing information…or any other knowing that doesn’t apply to conocer.  Saber + infinitive verb = knowing how to do something  Examples:  Yo no sé cómo te llamas. I don’t know what your name is.  ¿Sabes hablar español? Do you know how to speak Spanish?  ¿Qué no sabes hacer bien? What don’t you know how to do well?  Sabemos que la clase es fácil. We know that the class is easy.

5 Pausa…  Tell your pareja 5 important facts. Listen to your pareja. If it is something not in your notes, add it. Mark it if it is already there.  Write 5 questions on the left side. Mark the answers.

6 Try it…  Write in Spanish:  ¿Do you know my brother?  I don’t know.  I know how to read.  We need to know the vocabulary.

7 Check it…  ¿Do you know my brother?  ¿Conoces a mi hermano?  I don’t know.  Yo no sé.  I know how to read.  Yo sé leer.  We need to know the vocabulary.  Necesitamos saber el vocabulario.

8 YO-GO verbs  Yo-go verbs are another type of irregular verb.  In the “yo” form, it will end in “-go”  You already know tener…Yo tengo.  These verbs will sometimes be another type of irregular

9 YO-GO verbs  Here they are…Write ALL OF THEM  Tener (to have): tengo, tienes, tiene, tenemos, tienen  Hacer (to do, make): hago, haces, hace, hacemos, hacen  Poner (to put): pongo, pones, pone, ponemos, ponen  Salir (to leave): salgo, sales, sale, salimos, salen  Venir (to come-also stem-changing): vengo, vienes, viene, venimos, vienen  Traer (to bring): traigo, traes, trae, traemos, traen  Decir (to say/tell; stem-changing): digo, dices, dice, decimos, dicen  Oír (to hear…very irregular): oigo, oyes, oye, oímos, oyen

10 Pausa…  Tell your pareja 5 important facts. Listen to your pareja. If it is something not in your notes, add it. Mark it if it is already there.  Write 3 questions on the left side. Mark the answers.

11 Don’t forget the summary  What did you learn?  What was important?  How does this relate to previous knowledge?  What was easiest?  What will be most challenging?

12 Practicar  Write 5 sentences using saber (translate)  Write 5 sentences with conocer (translate)  Write 10 sentences using yo-go verbs (translate)
