Avancemos Negative tú commands

When Are Negative Commands Used? Negative Commands are used when you tell a person to not do an action. For Example: If you tell someone NOT to do something then in Spanish the negative command would be used. If you want to make a tú command negative (don’t…), you have to change the verb completely. You should follow a 3 step process:

How to form a negative tú command 1) Go to the yo form of the verb. 2) Drop the “o” (you are now left with the stem) 3) Add the opposite tú ending. (For “ar” verbs add – es. For “er/ir” verbs add –as). 4) ***DON’T FORGET TO ADD THE ‘NO’ IN FRONT OF THE VERB!

How to form a negative tú command However…if a verb is irregular in the “yo” form, it will also be irregular in the negative tú command. Examples: (go verbs) Poner  yo pongo ( I put)  No pongas (don’t put) Salir  yo salgo ( I leave)  No salgas (don’t leave) Traer  yo traigo ( I bring)  No traigas (don’t bring) (stem changers) Probar  yo pruebo ( I taste)  No pruebes ( don’t taste) Pedir  yo pido ( I order)  No pidas (don’t order) Dormir  yo duermo ( I sleep)  No duermas (don’t sleep)

Práctica: ① Don’t come ! ① Don’t boil the water ! ② Don’t leave ! ③ Don’t mix the garlic ! ① Don’t add oil ! ② Don’t make the cake !  ¡ No vengas !  ¡ No hiervas el agua !  ¡ No salgas !  ¡ No mezcles el ajo !  ¡ No añadas aceite !  ¡ No hagas el pastel !

S ser I ir D dar E estar S saber ¡ No seas ! ¡ No vayas ! ¡ No des ! ¡ No estés ! ¡ No sepas ! Irregular negative tú commands The following verbs are IRREGULAR (they form the acronym SIDES)

Práctica 1. Don’t go ! 1. Don’t be angry ! 2. Don’t give ! 3. Don’t be nice ! ¡ No vayas ! ¡ No estés enojado ! ¡ No des ! ¡ No seas amable !

Car/gar/zar verbs 0 We have already learned about car/gar/zar verbs in the preterite tense. 0 Remember how the yo form required a spelling change to maintain the sound of the infinitive? 0 Ejemplo: Yo sacé mi libro vs. Yo saqué mi libro. 0 That same spelling change is going to be necessary with negative commands! 0 buscar= c becomes qu=no busques 0 llegar = g becomes gu=no llegues 0 empezar = z becomes c =no empieces 0 Ejemplo: Por favor, no empieces ahora. Please, don’t start now.

Más Práctica… 1. Don’t eat the onions! 2. Don’t beat the mustard and the salt! 3. Don’t do the homework! 4. Don’t give me the mayonnaise! 5. Don’t go to class! 6. Don’t put the strawberries here! 7. Don’t make the cake! 8. Don’t be afraid! 9. Don’t boil the potatoes! 1. No comas las cebollas. 2. No batas la mostaza y la sal. 3. No hagas la tarea. 4. No me des la mayonesa. 5. No vayas a clase. 6. No pongas las fresas aquí 7. No hagas el pastel. 8. No tengas miedo. 9. No hiervas las patatas.

Pronouns with negative tú commands As you know, when using object pronouns (me, te, lo, la, los, las etc.) with positive commands, you must attach them to the end. Example: Cómelos (Eat them) With negative commands, the object pronouns go BEFORE the command (between the “NO” and the command). Example: No los comas (Don’t eat them)

Pronouns with negative tú commands Ejemplos: Don’t boil it. No lo hiervas. Don’t do it. No lo hagas. Don’t take them out. No los saques.

Pronouns with negative tú commands 1. Don’t touch them (masc) 2. Don’t add it (fem) 3. Don’t tell me. 1. No los toques. 2. No la añadas 3. No me digas GOOD NEWS!! - You will not need to worry about accents with negative commands because you are not changing the original stress of the word (the pronunciation)! Woohoo!

Una Práctica: 1. Don’t add them (the onions). 2. Don’t tell me. 3. Don’t mix it (the salt). 4. Don’t boil them (the potatoes). 5. Don’t pay it (la cuenta). 6. Don’t buy them (the shoes). 7.
