Astrocitomas Glioblastoma multiforme (50%) glioblastoma multiforme 02.jpg This is the worst possible form of glioma--a glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). These neoplasms are quite vascular with prominent areas of necrosis and hemorrhage. Note how this one has crossed the midline to the opposite hemisphere.

metastasis from a lung carcinoma.jpg
At the left is seen a metastasis from a lung carcinoma. Metastases most often appear at the border of the grey and white matter in the distribution of the middle cerebral artery, as in this case, because that is where the blood flow (vascular distribution) is most likely to take metastases.

Bacterial meningitis (stark)
Bacterial meningitis (stark)a.jpg Bacterial meningitis (stark)b.jpg Bacterial meningitis. A 32-year-old woman had headache and stiff neck as a result of Propionibacterium acnes meningitis. A and B, Noncontrast axial T1-weighted (SE 600/20) and T2-weighted (SE 2000/70) images do not disclose a meningeal abnormality, although mild prominence of the ventricles is present. A shunt tract is seen entering the right occipital horn. C, Postcontrast axial T1-weighted image (SE 600/20) demonstrates marked enhancement of the meninges surrounding the entire brain. Enhancement of the falx may be a normal finding, although in this case the enhancement is pathological. D, After treatment with antibiotics, a follow-up postcontrast axial scan shows resolution of previously noted meningeal enhancement. If fibrous change occurs in the meninges, however, enhancement after meningitis or other meningeal disease may be permanent
