Imperfecto Subjuntivo Irregulares unit 7

¿Cuándo se usa el imperfecto subjuntivo? independent clause in the past (WEIRDO is past) independent clause that refers to a previous occurrence (WEIRDO is present) to indicate unlikely events (ojalá que subjunctive) “If” clauses (if, subjunctive, conditional) formal request (only deber, querer, poder)

¿Cómo se usa el subjuntivo? (Reasons 1-3) Para usar el subjuntivo, tienes que… Nombre #1 Escoger una frase de un categoría de weirdo (este verbo se queda en el indicativo) Que Nombre #2 Verbo en el subjuntivo Escribe el resto de la frase (Nombre #1) + (Weirdo) + que + (nombre# 2) (verbo) (resto de frase) Yo esperé que tú usaras el teléfono.

¿Cómo se usa el imperfecto subjuntivo? To be able to use reasons 4-5, you would: 4. Start with the “if,” use the subjunctive phrase (what is unlikely to happen), have a phrase in the conditional mood (to say what would happen). If I were taller, I would play basketball. Si fuera más alta, jugaría básquetbol. 5. Conjugate either “deber” “querer” or “poder” in the imperfect subjunctive, finish the sentence. You could do your homework every night. Podras hacer tú tarea cada noche.

Irregulares Si un verbo es irregular en el pretérito, va a tener la irregularidad en el imperfecto subjuntivo. No hay verbos irregulares específicos en este modo, pero es importante seguir los irregulares en el pretérito.

-ir stem-changers -ir verbs that stem-change in the preterite tense will keep the stem change in the imperfect subjunctive. (conjugate for they, cut off the -ron) o -> u e -> i ex. dormir conjugates as durmieron, new stem would be durmie servir conjugates as sirvieron, new stem would be sirvie Other verbs include: pedir, repetir, morir, divertir, preferir * DO NOT stem change -ar and -er verbs, as they do not stem change in the preterite

Double Vowel Verbs -Er and -ir verbs with a double vowel at the end of the stem get a -ye before the - ron ending in the preterite tense. This new ending will follow through in the imperfect subjunctive. ejemplo: leer conjugates as leyeron, new stem would be leye oír conjugates as oyeron, new stem would be oye Similar verbs include: creer, caer, poseer, construir, concluir, incluir, contribuir

-ucir verbs Verbs that end in -ucir conjugate with irregularities in the preterite, so that irregularity will follow into the imperfect subjunctive. -ucir verbs will become -jeron for the ellos/ellas/ustedes form Ejemplo: Producir conjugated as produjeron, new stem is produje Similar verbs: aducir, conducir, coproducir, deducir, inducir, introducir, reducir, traducir

-go verbs -go verbs have a spelling change in the preterite, thus a spelling change in the imperfect subjunctive ejemplo: tener in the preterite is tuvieron, new stem is tuvie hacer in the preterite is hicieron, new stem is hicie Similar verbs are poner, traer, decir, venir, hacer

Others The following verbs are irregular in the preterite tense, thus making them irregular in the imperfect subjunctive tense saber supieron andar anduvieron poner pusieron estar estuvieron caber cupieron poder pudieron haber hubieron ser fueron querer quisieron ir fueron hacer hicieron

Notas Whatever irregularity these verbs have in the preterite tense, it will carry into the imperfect subjunctive tense as well Use the ellos/ellas/ustedes form of the verb in the preterite tense to get the new stem for the imperfect subjunctive-just cut the -ron off The endings to these verbs stays the same, it’s the stem you need to watch out for

¡Pruébalo! Conjuga los verbos irregulares en el imperfecto subjuntivo: They hoped that you would come home. (esperar, venir) It’s good that they had their homework. (ser, tener) Hopefully we will win the trip to Europe. (ganar) If you believed in aliens, you would be scared. (creer, tener) They would like her to be happy everyday. (querer, estar)
