1 PRESENT TENSE VERB ENDINGS IN SPANISH:
Verbs that end in –R are called ‘infinitive verbs.’ This means that the verb has no actor. Example: to cry, to eat, to yell, etc. NOT: I cry, she eats, you yell, etc. There are three REGULAR types of verbs in Spanish: -ar, -er, -ir ALL VERBS ARE LIKE LEGOS. You break off the -ar, -er, -ir ending and add on the new one. We can tell who is the ‘actor’ in a sentence by looking at the verb ending. Tell your partner: ¿Cómo se dice en español? He eats 6. We live I eat You (formal) eat They eat 8. We talk She talks 9. You all talk You (familiar) live 10. You all live HABLAR COMER VIVIR NOTICE THAT yo hablo como vivo -er and –ir are tú hablas comes vives the SAME él, ella, usted habla come vive except for nosotros/as hablamos comemos vivimos nosotros ustedes/ellos hablan comen viven Él come Yo como Ellos comen Ella habla Tú vives Nosotros vivimos Usted come Nosotros hablamos Ustedes hablan Ustedes viven

2 Within present tense verbs there are also:
Stem-changing verbs -GO verbs Irregular verbs Stem-changing verbs: (o  ue) poder  yo puedo (most common) (e ie) pensar  yo pienso (most common) (e  i) pedir  yo pido (least common) -GO verbs: ONLY change in the YO form. The rest follows a normal pattern. Examples: HACER TENER SALIR NOTICE THAT yo hago tengo salgo -er and –ir are tú haces tienes sales the SAME él, ella, usted hace tiene sale except for nosotros/as hacemos tenemos salimos nosotros ustedes/ellos hacen tienen salen *** It is possible for a verb to be BOTH a –GO verb AND a stem-changing verb (tener, poner, etc.) Irregular verbs do not have to follow a pattern and so will look strange. Even so, there is still SOME pattern that you will see. –o, -s, -a, -mos, -n) Example: the verb IR a (voy a, vas a, vamos a, van a)
