We’ve talked about what we like and love. We’ve talked about what we prefer and what we want to do to be healthy. Now we are going to learn how to use the verb “tener” in a phrase to communicate what we have to do! You’re going to take some important notes next. The teacher will give you a note-taking sheet and you need to make sure to complete this task!

“I have to drink more wáter.” Read this slide to yourself and take down the notes on your white paper the teacher gave you. Los Requisitos, pesamientos y los consejos: Communicating Needs, Thoughts & Advice   Parte #1: Using ‘tener+que+infinitive verb’ Use this phrase to express Things that people have to do/things they’re required to do. The phrase “(Yo) tengo que beber más agua” means “I have to drink more wáter.” You must use an infinitive with this structure (a verb with its -ar, -er, -ir ending) DO NOT CONJUGATE like this: Yo tengo que bebo menos refrescos. Don’t get stuck on the literal translation for this phrase because it doesn’t sound right. Focus on the interpretation.

Yo tengo que hacer más ejercicio… Yo tengo que comer 3-minute Partner Activity: Practice asking and answering the question below using the new, correct structure. ¿Qué tienes que hacer para mantener la salud? A: What do you have to do to maintain your health? Yo tengo que hacer más ejercicio… Yo tengo que comer más verduras, bien, mejor… Yo tengo que beber menos café, más agua… B: I have to do more exercise OR I have to eat… OR I have to drink…

Expressing Thoughts & Beliefs Let’s move on to talk about what we think and what we believe! We’re going to use a new verb, creer, and that word ‘que’ again! Read this slide to yourself and write down the notes under “Part 2: Using ‘creer + que’. Expressing Thoughts & Beliefs Usando el verbo: creer The verb creer means “to think”. It’s a regular –er verb It is used with the word ‘que’, which means “that” in this context. Always use the creer with que

creo crees cree creemos creéis creen “I think so” “I don’t think so” Make sure to get down the following information on your note-taking sheet. yo creo  nosotros creemos tú crees  vosotros  creéis él, ella, Ud. cree ellos, ellas, Uds.  creen The phrase “(Yo) creo que sí” means “I think so” The phrase “(Yo) creo que no” means “I don’t think so” The question “¿Qué crees (tú)?” means What do you think?

3-minute Individual Activity: Finish each sentence to describe the new foods. Remember to use ‘es’ OR ‘son’ & an adj. in the right form. La práctica con ‘creer + que’ Write a sentence describing your opinion of each food below. Remember to make each part of your sentence “agree” with one another in gender and quantity. Example: Los guisantes son malos. Creo que sí Creo que no _____ 6-minute Mingle Activity: You will walk around the classroom finding a new classmate to share each of your sentences. After you share your opinion, ask the target question, “What do you think?” Circle your partner’s response and get their initials. 2) Participate in the ‘Firma aquí’. Share your opinions with different classmates by reading one of your lines. Then ask your classmate, ¿Qué crees tú?”. Circle their answer and get students’ initials next to their answers. Los guisantes _______________________ Creo que sí Creo que no _____ La cebolla __________________________ Creo que sí Creo que no _____

Let’s move on. Now it’s time to give ourselves and others advice Let’s move on! Now it’s time to give ourselves and others advice! This is going to use another new verb! Write down notes in your “Part 3: Using ‘deber’ to give advice. Usando el verbo: deber It’s a regular –er verb and it literally means “to ought to.” It is our “should” verb. It is used with other verbs back to back (I should eat/You should drink) The first verb (deber in this case) will be conjugated but the second verb will not. It will stay an infinitive. We’ve been doing this already… Yo debo correr. Me gusta bailar. ¿Te encanta comer?

debo debemos debes debéis debe deben Make sure to get down the following information on your note-taking sheet. yo debo  nosotros debemos  tú  debes vosotros debéis  él, ella, Ud.  debe ellos, ellas, Uds. deben

Práctica con los consejos – Practice Giving Advice Now let’s try it out! The teacher will give 1/2 of the people one color sheet (Persona A) and ½ of the people the other color sheet (Persona B). Read the rest of the directions below. Práctica con los consejos – Practice Giving Advice La práctica con ‘deber’ You are going to work with a partner. Each student will have a different sheet (estudiante A or estudiante B). 2) Each person is going to take turns sharing one lifestyle habit from their sheet by reading it outloud. 3) The partner who is listening must evaluate the statement and provide advice, completing the sentence starter provided ‘Tú debes…’. They should both state the advice aloud and write it on their sheet of paper. ESTUDIANTE A ESTUDIANTE B 1. A mí me gustan mucho las galletas porque son sabrosas. Tú debes… comer menos galletas y mas frutas porque son dulces y mas saludables. EXAMPLE
