El futuro Expresses what will happen in the future. –Lo haré. I shall do it./I will do it. ir + a + infinitive is used to express the near future. The future tense expresses both the immediate (near) future and the remote future. The future expresses probability or conjecture in the present tense.

Conjecture regarding the present –¿Qué hora será? I wonder what time it is. –¿Quién estará a la puerta? I wonder who is at that the door. /Who can that be at the door? ¿Estará contaminado el aire? –Could the air be contaminated? Sí, será por el plomo de la gasolina. –Yes, its probably because of the lead in the gasoline. (probability)

Probability regarding the present –Serán las cinco. It is probably five oclock. / It must be five oclock. –Tendrá muchos amigos. He probably has many friends. /He must have many friends. –María estará enferma. Mary is probably sick. / Mary must be sick. An indirect quotation –María dice que vendrá mañana. Mary says that she will come tomorrow.

Some common expressions of future time: mañana más tarde la semana/mes/año que viene esta tarde/noche mañana por la mañana/tarde/noche

Mañana hablaremos con el cientifico. –Tomorrow we will talk with the scientist. ¿Asistirás a la conferencia conmigo? –Will you attend the conference with me?

Change to the future Miguel me acompaña. –Miguel me acompañará. Pasamos dos meses viajando. –Pasaremos dos meses viajando.

Irregular Verbs There are 12 standard verbs that are irregular. The endings remain the same however there are changes in the stem. These irregular verbs can be broken into three groups. **REMEMBER: When a prefix is added to an irregular verb to make a new verb, the new verb will have the same stem changes.

Group 1: The future stem is different from the stem of the regular verb. decir = dir –diré –dirás –dirá –diremos –dirán hacer = har –haré –harás –hará –haremos –harán rehacer*

Group 2: The e of the infinitive is dropped to form the stem of the future. haber = habr poder = podr querer = querr* saber = sabr caber = cabr * Notice the double rr

En la ciudad hay mucho ruido. –En la ciudad habrá mucho ruido. Andres y Manuel quieren ir tambien. –Andres y Manuel querrán ir tambien. Ud. puede viajar en el auto con nosotros. –Ud. podrá viajar en el auto con nosotros.

Group 3: The e or i of the infinitive is replaced by d to form the stem of the future. poner = pondr –componer** –oponerse** –suponer** –ponerse** –suponer** tener = tendr –contener** –sostener** –detener** –abstenerse** –obtener** –mantener** –atenerse salir = saldr valer = valdr venir = vendr –convenir**

Salimos para la ciudad para ir al campo. –Saldremos para la ciudad para ir al campo. Ponen la tarea en el cesto. –Pondrán la tarea en el cesto. Tengo que ir a la fiesta. –Tendré que ir a la fiesta. El viene mañana. –El vendrá mañana.

Traducciones: usen el presente, préterito, imperfecto, o el futuro She believed a lie. –Ella creyó una mentira. My eyes are green. –Mis ojos son verdes. Did she read the book? –¿Leyó ella el libro? She used to swim. –Ella nadaba. Ana would buy chocolate. –Ana compraba chocolate.

He fell. –Él se cayó. This novel is boring. –Esta novela es aburrida. Tim did the homework. –Tim hizo la tarea. Every morning I went to my Spanish class. –Todas las mañanas iba a mi clase de español. You (informal) will prepare dinner. –Tú prepararás la cena. We went to the park on Sunday. –Fuimos al parque el domingo.

Who will help? –¿Quién ayudará? Tomorrow it will rain in California. –Mañana lloverá en California. They are our friends. –Ellos son nuestros amigos. We are ready. –Estamos listos.
