In speaking with our customers, analysts and educators, we see an increasing gap in organizatios between IT and business. Today we’ll talk about what’s caused the gap and how to address it.

The # of transactions and data they have to manage. New ways they need to interact with users (mobile, social) that weren’t around years ago. Their expectation is that IT will bring answers to navigating those challenges and new technologies. HP research shows that on average IT organizations spends 70% of their budget and resources on maintenance. But only 30% on driving new initiatives forward. The reason why cloud and CI are interesting to IT is they provide way to reduce cost of operations and reinvest those resources on innovation. That way they can invest in initiatives to address these problems and create revenue streams for the company. So we as HP spend time working with customers to help them take advantage of technologies such as cloud and CI. We’ve found they’re happy with the technology we’ve introduced to solve these issue, but IT is running into three non-technology related roadblocks that are inhibiting organizations from truly realizing the value of technology innovations. Supporting points: IT and business skills – IT may not have skills on staff to manage emerging technologies. Suppliers may not either. IT needs to develop on business skills and focus on end-to-end architecture. And as business works more closely with IT, we need business staff who need a new set of skills and we’re going to talk about that today. Business process – Business processes struggle to keep pace with new technology. For example, customers implementing a new CRM system who want to do big data analytics to improve customer intelligence. Their current business process likely isn’t capturing all the data necessary to make that process viable. The business process needs to be re-aligned so that the data necessary to support new technology is captured. In theory you design business process first, then IT. But in the age of cloud and pre-packaged software as a service, the technology moves more quickly with the business process lagging behind. Governance & alignment between business and IT – There needs to be more alignment for the relationship between IT and LOB. How do projects get funded, how are priorities set? How well are resources utilized across the organization? IT is often looked at as a cost center. But when they’re seen as a strategic innovation partner for the business, LOB managers and IT can work together to find strategic ways to differentiate the organization. That means better alignment between IT and business, which requires executive support to design a plan, fund it, move forward. Transition: Today these three things aren’t always in place. Business operates independently of IT, and the gap increases. HP has a roadmap for how business and IT can work together to close the expectation and capability gap and evolve together over time. There are a number of technology “maturity models” for software and hardware – but they all reflect the same basic concept: the movement from siloes and ad hoc activities to collaborative, business-driven innovation. At the far left, IT and LOB managers operate independently. At the far right, IT and LOB work together. The IT dept is seen as a strategic business enabler and not a cost center. In order to accomplish this, you need staff on both sides of the fence who understand each other. Supporting points: Compartmentalized – IT strategy and execution owned by each LOB. Control of IT and expenditures. Challenge – no cross-company experience for user and no leverage of assets across the company. Plus, the cost of IT skyrockets under this model. They all overspend rather than shared. Standardized – The organization now moves to an executive mandate to centralize IT resources. They’ll standardize platform and processes and converge to get cost under control. Good, but the focus for IT still on cost savings and reduction as opposed to investment to meet strategic business outcomes. Optimized – The organization begins to implement a convergence process and sees the benefits of cross-company information assets. Costs are now under control, and the organization starts to think about innovation and develop a prioritization process between IT and business to allocate resources for strategic initiatives. Automated – IT becomes a strategic partner for the business. There’s a governance model and alignment between two orgs where IT is a strategic weapon. IT projects are business-driven. IT seen as innovation rather than cost center. Transition: Getting all the way to automated requires a new skill level not just for IT but for business as well.
