 Gramática A few notes about grammar Make sure you are studying at least 20 minutes a night!

Adjectives  Adjectives modify nouns  Adjectives are description words for: people, places, things, or ideas  Adjectives are typically placed after the noun  The exception to this rule is quantity- they are placed before noun  Which adjectives do you know, besides numbers, that are quantitative?

Adjectives  Adjectives must agree in quantity (singular or plural) and gender (masculine or feminine)  (We’ve already gone over this- you should have the notes for it already. This is just review) Sentence in EnglishSpanish TranslationRules in context I have a red carYo tengo un carro rojoSingular/Masculine/ Qualitative adjective after noun You have many good looking friends (all females) Tú tienes muchas amigas guapas Plural/Feminine/Quanti tative adjective before noun/Qualititative adjective after noun We read good booksNosotros leemos libros buenos Plural/Masculine/Qualit ative adjective after noun They eat many good hamburgers Ellos comen muchas hamburguesas buenas Plural/Feminine/Quanti tative adjective before noun/Qualitative adjective after noun Key: Qualitative adjective Quantitative adjective Noun

Contractions  We only have 2 contractions in Spanish:  a + el = al  de + el = del  “a”- at/to  “de”- of/from  “el”- the  Every time you have the word “a” or “de” in a Sentence and the word “el” (article for singular/masculine noun) comes immediately after, you have to make the contraction.  Yo llego a el colegio a las siete Yo llego al colegio a las siete.  “el colegio is the noun in the sentence.

Contractions  Another example:  Yo salgo de el colegio a las dos y cuarto de la tarde  Yo salgo del colegio a las dos y cuarto de la tarde Unlike contractions in English, the 2 contractions in Spanish are not voluntary. You must use them!

Cohesive Devices  You must use cohesive devices to make your sentences flow.  We use them in English,  They are equally important in Spanish  You already have a few: “y”, “o”, “también”, “tampoco”, “pero”  If you look at your rubric, you will notice you are graded on your use of cohesive devices
