Grammar/ How to form the imperfect tense. The imperfect is used to describe something that was not completed in the past. You use it… Talk about something that was happening. Talk about something you used to do. Say how old someone was. Tell what time it was. There are ways other than the simple past tense(I VISITED) to say that something happened. You can also say I used to visit or I was visiting. In Spanish these ideas are expressed by the imperfect tense.

Regular verbs in the imperfect take these endings: Estar Yo estaba Tú estabas Él, ella, usted estaba Nosotros(as) estábamos Vosotros(as) estabais Ellos, ellas, ustedes estaban Yo estaba en el cine cuando llovía afuera. I was at the movie theater when it was raining outside.

-ER ENDINGS Hacer(to make) Yo hacía Tú hacías Él, ella, usted hacía Nosotros hacíamos Vosotros hacíais Ellos, ellas, Ustedes hacían. Yo estaba en la cocina cuando mi mamá hacía el pastel. I was at the kitchen when my mon was doing the cake.

-IR ENDINGS Salir(to go out, to leave) Yo salía Tú salias Él, ella, Usted salía Nosotros salíamos Vosotros salíais Ellos, ellas, ustedes salían Yo estaba en la biblioteca, cuando él salía del cine. I was at the library when he was leaving.

Only three verbs are irregular in the imperfect. Ser ir ver Yo era iba veía Tú eras ibas veías Él,ella, Usted era iba veía éramos íbamos veíamos erais ibais veíais eran iban veían Cuando yo era niña, íbamos a la playa. When I was little, we used to go to the beach.
