3 Preterite  You have already learned to talk about the past using the preterite tense for actions that began and ended at a definite time.

4 Preterite  Ana cantó en la fiesta anoche.  Ana sang at the party last night.  (Completed past action.)

5 Imperfect  The imperfect tense is another way to talk about the past. We use it to describe actions without any indication of their beginning or end.

6 Imperfect  Ana cantaba.  Ana was singing.  (No indication of beginning or end.)

7 When do we use it?  Descriptions  Actions in progress  Repeated actions  Time, date, age and weather

8 Descriptions  To describe people and places, in the past. Example: El estadio estaba lleno. Los entrenadores gritaban.

9 Actions in progress  To talk about a past action that was continuous or that kept happening. (habitual action). Example: Los atletas se entrenaban en el gimnasio

10 Repeated actions  We use the imperfect to talk about actions that happened repeatedly in the past. In English we often say “used to” or “would” to express this idea.

11 Example:  Generalmente caminaban mucho.  Generally they would walk a lot.

12 Más ejemplos  Todos los días jugaban con otros niños de la familia.  They used to play with other children in the family.

13 Time, date, age and weather  To describe time, date and age, in the past.

14 Example  Era el 5 de noviembre. Cuando era pequeño vivía en una ciudad donde hacía calor.

15 Note:  Expressions such as generalmente, a menudo, muchas veces, todos los días, siempre, and nunca can cue us to use the imperfect.

16 Imperfect  Here are all the forms of -ar verbs in the imperfect. Notice the accent mark on the nosotros form.

17 Estar (to be) Yo estaba Tú estabas Él Ella estaba Ud. Nos. estábamos Vos. estabais Ellos Ellas estaban Uds.

18 Imperfect Let’s do one more ar verb.

19 PATINAR (to skate) Yo Tú Él Ella Ud. Nos. Vos. Ellos Ellas Uds.

20  Now we will learn the -er/- ir verb endings in the imperfect tense. Imperfect

21 TENER (to have) Yo tenía Tú tenías Él Ella tenía Ud. Nos. teníamos Vos. teníais Ellos Ellas tenían Uds.

22 Imperfect Let’s do one more er verb.

23 COMER (to eat) Yo Tú Él Ella Ud. Nos. Vos. Ellos Ellas Uds.

24 VIVIR (to live) Yo vivía Tú vivías Él Ella vivía Ud. Nos. vivíamos Vos. vivíais Ellos Ellas vivían Uds.

25 Imperfect Let’s do one more ir verb.

26 The Imperfect  There are three irregular verbs in the imperfect. The verbs IR, SER, and VER.

27 IR iba ibas iba íbamos ibais iban

28 SER era eras era éramos erais eran

29 VER veía veías veía veíamos veíais veían

30 Sentir (to feel) Yo Tú Él Ella Ud. Nos. Vos. Ellos Ellas Uds.

31  Since the yo and the Ud./él/ella forms are the same, we often use the subject pronouns to avoid confusion. Imperfect

32 The Imperfect  The imperfect form of hay is había/habían (there was/were, there used to be)  Generalmente, no habían muchos participantes en el campeonato.
