2 The Imperfect Tense:

3 Preterite  You have already learned to talk about the past using the preterite tense for actions that began and ended at a definite time and thus are considered completed actions. (-ed)

4 Preterite  Ana cantó en la fiesta anoche.  Ana sang at the party last night.  (Completed past action.)

5 Imperfect  The imperfect tense is another way to talk about the past. We use it to describe actions without any indication of their beginning or end. (TAP)

6 Imperfect  Ana cantaba.  Ana was singing.  (No indication of beginning or end.)

7 Imperfect  We use the imperfect to talk about actions that happened repeatedly in the past. In English we often say “used to,” “was-ing or were-ing” or “would” to express this idea.

8 Imperfect  Generalmente caminaban mucho.  Generally they would walk a lot.

9 Imperfect  Jugaban con otros niños de la familia.  They used to play with other children in the family.

10 Imperfect  Here are all the forms of -ar verbs in the imperfect. Notice the accent mark on the nosotros form.

11 CAMINAR (to walk) Yo caminaba Tú caminabas Él Ella caminaba Ud. Nosostros caminábamos Vosotros caminabais Ellos Ellas caminaban Uds.

12  Since the yo and the Ud./él/ella forms are the same, we often use the subject pronouns to avoid confusion. Imperfect

13 Let’s do a few more verbs.

14 JUGAR (to play) Yo jugaba Tú jugabas Él Ella jugaba Ud. Nosostros jugábamos Vosostros jugabais Ellos Ellas jugaban Uds.

15  Now we will learn the -er/-ir verb endings in the imperfect tense. Imperfect

16 COMER (to eat) Yo comía Tú comías Él Ella comía Ud. Nosostros comíamos Vosotros comíais Ellos Ellas comían Uds.

17 VIVIR (to live) Yo vivía Tú vivías Él Ella vivía Ud. Nosotros vivíamos Vosotros vivíais Ellos Ellas vivían Uds.

18  Now we will learn the 3 irregulars in the imperfect tense. Imperfect

19 IR (to go) Yo iba Tú ibas Él Ella iba Ud. Nosotros íbamos Vosostros ibais Ellos Ellas iban Uds.

20 SER (to be) Yo era Tú eras Él Ella era Ud. Nosotros éramos Vosotros erais Ellos Ellas eran Uds.

21 VER (to see) Yo veía Tú veías Él Ella veía Ud. Nosotros veíamos Vosotros veíais Ellos Ellas veían Uds.

22 Imperfect  Expressions such as generalmente, a menudo, muchas veces, todos los días, siempre, and nunca can cue us to use the imperfect.
