Let's look at some examples of proper use in the present tense. Tengo que cocinar la cena. I have to cook dinner. ¿Tengo que estar en el apartamento? Do I have to be in the apartment? Tengo que aprender las palabras. I have to learn the words. Tengo que ir a la biblioteca. I have to go to the library.
