Hace + Time Expressions Realidades Capitulo 1B

When to use Hace + Time + Que This structure is used to talk about something that has started in the past and has been going on until right now. In English it would correspond to phrases such as: “I have been playing Hockey for 2 years” or “George has been dating Laura for 3 months”. In both sentences something started in the past and continues until now.

FIRST, HOW TO ASK … To ask someone how long it has been since something started to happen you need to use the structure: ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que + (present tense verb)? Let’s try: ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que Marco habla Español? ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que tu ensayas con la banda? ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que ustedes cantan en el coro?

THEN… HOW TO ANSWER. To answer the previous question you need to follow the structure: Hace+ (time) + que + (present tense verb) Let’s Try: Hace tres años que Marco habla español. Hace dos meses que yo ensayo con la banda. Hace quince días que nosotros cantamos con el coro. (

Remembering time expressions… Minutos Horas Días Semanas Meses Años

Practice Each student will go around the classroom and ask another student the question: ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que + present tense verb? The second student will answer the question using: Hace + tiempo + que + present tense verb. The roles will then change, and the student who answered the question will ask a different question, and the one who asked the question will answer.

Teacher will give 2 minutes for each pair to complete their conversation. When teacher claps, each student will find another peer to practice with. Each student should speak with at least 8 other people.
