3 Uses of Tener: Talk about ownership: what someone has.
Talk about hair and eye color. Talk about age. Talk about what someone “must or has” to do (obligation). Specific expressions: (hungry, thirsty) Talk about what someone “feels like” doing

4 Expressing Ownership: Tener + noun
Conjugate the verb tener to match the subject. Ex: Tú tienes un desayuno rico. Ex: Los chicos tienen los dulces.

5 Expressing hair / eye color: Tener + el pelo + color (masc
Expressing hair / eye color: Tener + el pelo + color (masc. / sing) Tener + los ojos + color (masc / plural) Conjugate the verb tener to match the subject. Ex: Lola tiene el pelo rubio. Ex: Uds. tienen los ojos verdes.

6 Expressing age: Tener _____ años. #
To be (to have) ____ years old. # Conjugate the verb tener to match the subject. Ex: Yo tengo catorce años. Ex: Ramón tiene veintidós años.

7 To have to do something Tener que + infinitive
Conjugate the verb tener. Leave the (obligation) in the infinitive (unconjugated verb). Ex: Nosotros tenemos que estudiar.

8 To be thirsty (To have thirst) Tener sed
Tener DOES NOT mean “to be”. Conjugate the verb tener to match the subject. Ex: Yo tengo sed. Ex:¿Tú tienes sed?

9 To be hungry (To have hunger) Tener hambre
Tener DOES NOT mean “to be”. Conjugate the verb tener to match the subject. Ex: Ellos tienen hambre para una hamburguesa. Ex: ¿Tú tienes hambre?

10 Expressing what one feels like doing: Tener ganas de + infinitive
To feel like doing something. Conjugate the verb tener to match the subject. Use ganas de (you will not use del because the de will be followed by an infinitive. Leave the activity (what they feel like doing) in the infinitive (unconjugated verb).

11 Tener ganas de + infinitive
Ex: Yo tengo ganas de escuchar música. Ex: Pedro y yo tenemos ganas de compartir el helado. Ex: Tú y Juan tienen ganas de mirar la televisión.

12 Tener que AND tener ganas de
Tener que and tener ganas de will be followed by another verb The other verb will not be conjugated. It will stay in the infinitive. Yo tengo que estudiar. I have to study. Yo tengo ganas de practicar deportes.

13 Grammatical rule When two verbs are next to each other in a sentence, and the subject DOES NOT change, the the first verb will be conjugated and the second verb will not. The second verb remains an infinitive.
