PRACTICE WITH THE SUBJUNCTIVE NOTES

EL SUBJUNTIVO: The indicative mood (present tense, past tense, etc.) express actions that DEFINITELY are taking place, did take place or will take place. The indicative mood expresses objective, factual, REAL information. The subjunctive mood is used more in Spanish than in English. It expresses what MAY BE, desires (wants, wishes), doubts and opinions. It usually appears in a clause introduced by QUE. (may be) Ejemplo: Espero que Ana sea simpática. (doubt) Ejemplo: Es malo que fumes cigarros (you smoke cigarettes). (opinion) To form the subjunctive, find the YO form of the verb in the present tense, take off the –o, and then add the subjunctive ending (-AR VERBS SWITCH TO –ER ENDINGS, AND –ER/-IR ENDINGS CHANGE TO –AR)

¡A PRACTICAR!

WHEN TO USE THE SUBJUNCTIVE: The subjunctive is found OFTEN in the Spanish language in both present and past tense in Spanish and is very subtle. You use subjunctive when you express opinions, advice, wishes, imagined futures, and doubts, with a QUE. Here is the formula for the most common uses of the subjunctive: Desires, demands, recommendations, imagined future (quiero, espero, etc.)

Ejemplo: It’s good that you study every day.  Es__________que I prefer that you not copy from my test.  ______________________________ I suggest that you see the movie ‘Evil Dead’.  ______________________________ I don’t believe that he knows anything.  ______________________________ I don’t like that you put your feet on the table.  ______________________________ It’s better that you see for yourself.  ______________________________ I hope that there isn’t a test today in Science!  ______________________________ I want to marry someone that is rich.  ______________________________ It’s possible that Jane won’t be able to come with us.  ________________________ Wish, want, demand Recommendation Doubt Emotion Es___________que Wish, want Unknown future, wish/want Es____que, unknown future

Te toca a tí: Now write your own example for each category and then share with a partner. Desires, demands, recommendations, imagined future: Wish, want, demand: __________________________________________________ Recommendations: _____________________________________________________ Imagined future: _______________________________________________________ Es__________que______________________________________________________ Doubt ________________________________________________________________ Emotion______________________________________________________________

Es horrible que comas tanta basura. ¡Es increíble que Juanito coma tanto chocolate! No me gusta el chocolate. Quiero comer chocolate.
