10 Porque quien pide, recibe; quien busca; encuentra, y al que toca, se le abre. 11 ¿Habrá entre, ustedes algún padre que, cuando su hijo le pida pescado, le dé una víbora? 12 ¿O cuando le pida huevo, le dé un alacrán? 13 Pues, si ustedes, que son malos, saben dar cosas buenas a sus hijos, ¿cuánto más el Padre celestial dará el Espíritu Santo a quienes se lo pidan?”.

7 and he says in reply from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door has already been locked and my children and I are already in bed. I cannot get up to give you anything.’ 8 I tell you, if he does not get up to give him the loaves because of their friendship, he will get up to give him whatever he needs because of his persistence. 9 “And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

10 For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. 11 What father among you would hand his son a snake when he asks for a fish? 12 Or hand him a scorpion when he asks for an egg? 13 If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the holy Spirit to those who ask him?”

July 28, 2013 This is the Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. It is important to point out that St. Luke tells us the Lord was praying when the disciples then asked him to teach them how to pray. All the important moments in the Life of Christ came after much prayer. This most important teaching of the Lord, the Our Father, came out of his heart after he had been praying. He had been in prayerful union with the Father and the Holy Spirit.

Este es el decimoséptimo domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Este es el decimoséptimo domingo del Tiempo Ordinario. Me parece importante notar que San Lucas nos dice que el Señor estaba orando cuando los discípulos le pidieron que les enseñara a orar. Todos los más importantes momentos de la vida de Cristo sucedieron después de mucha oración. Ésta sumamente importante enseñanza del Señor, la del Padre Nuestro, salió de su corazón después de que había estado orando. Él había estado en unión intima con el Padre y el Espirito Santo.

The first petition of the Our Father is “Our Father, hallowed be thy Name.” It is when Jesus introduced us to a new way of speaking to God. He uses the word “Abba” “Father” every time he prayed. This shows it was an important point for him and for us. In the times of Jesus, this was the way children spoke to their fathers. The endearing words of “Abba” and “Imma” (Mother) were the first words of a child, and were used everyday. They were household words, words often used among family members. So Jesus wants us to treat God as our Father, in the same way as He did.

La primera petición del Padre Nuestro es “Padre Nuestro, santificado sea tu nombre.” Aquí es cuando Jesús nos introduce a un nuevo modo de hablar con Dios. Usaba la palabra “Abba” “Padre” cada vez que oraba. Esto muestra que era punto importante para Él y para nosotros. En los tiempos de Jesús, en esta manera los niños hablaban con sus padres. Las palabras de cariño “Abba” y “Imma” (Madre) eran las primeras palabras de un niño, y se usaban diariamente. Eran palabras caseras, palabras usadas frecuentemente entre la familia. The Fathers of the early Church confirm that this was the case in the Aramaic language they knew. Chrysostom, Theodore of Mopsuestia, and Theodoret of Cyprus were all from Antioch. They all had nurses that spoke Aramaic. They spoke from their experience.

All things have been delivered to me by my Father; and no one knows the Father except the Son, and any one to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”

God has conceded the fullness of knowledge to Jesus as Son by predilection. Jesus authorized his disciples to repeat “Abba” when speaking to God, just as he had done. He made them heirs. They were to be children of God. He gave them power, as disciples, to speak to God, confiding in Him like little children.

The second petition of the Our Father is “Thy kingdom come The second petition of the Our Father is “Thy kingdom come.” Remember that the kingdom sayings were central to the teaching of Jesus. There are over a hundred of them. Jesus proclaimed the coming of his kingdom with a sense of urgency. All else is in relation to the kingdom, and derives its significance from its proclamation: ( reconciliation, and ethical teachings, the challenge to discipleship, the welcoming of outcasts). It was all about the kingdom. The coming of the kingdom would be decisive for salvation.

La segunda petición del Padre Nuestro es “Venga tu Reino La segunda petición del Padre Nuestro es “Venga tu Reino.” Recuerden que los dichos del reino son centrales a las enseñanzas de Jesús. Hay mas de cien. Jesús proclama la venida del reino con un sentido de urgencia. Todo lo demás (reconciliación, enseñanzas acerca de lo que es bien o mal, el desafió a ser discípulos, el recibir de los expulsados), esta con relación al reino, y recibe su importancia de su proclamación. Todo esto se trata del reino. La venida del reino será decisivo para la salvación.

The third petition says: “Give us this day our daily bread The third petition says: “Give us this day our daily bread.” An early church Father, Tertullian (On Prayer 6), reminds us that Christ is our bread, come down from heaven. Jesus said: “I am the Bread of life, he who eats this bread shall live forever. This bread is the living Bread come down from heaven” (John 6:33-35). When we ask for our daily bread, we are asking to live forever in Christ and to be inseparably united with his Body.

When early Church Father John Cassian (in Conference 9 When early Church Father John Cassian (in Conference 9.1) says this bread must be eaten each day, it means that we have to receive Christ each day. We need to accept Jesus as our Savior each day. If we accepted Jesus yesterday he was there to nourish us and strengthen us yesterday. We need to do it again today in a similar fashion. There is no day in which we can tell the Lord that we don’t need him. We need to pray every day, that, as the living bread come down from heaven, he come and strengthen our hearts within us.

We are also asking God our Father to continue to provide the daily bread we need for our bodies. We ask with confidence, for in Matthew 6:25-26, 33-34 Jesus also said: “Do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them”. Do not be anxious, your Father knows that you need them all. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.”

Estamos pidiéndole a Dios Padre que siga dándonos el pan diario que necesitamos para nuestros cuerpos. Lo hacemos confiando en Él, porque en Mateo 6:25-26,33-34 Jesús dijo: “No anden preocupados por la vida pensando que van a comer o a beber, ni por el cuerpo, pensando con que se van a vestir. ¿No vale mas la vida que el alimento, y el cuerpo mas que el vestido? The fourth petition of the Our Father is “Forgive us our sins (debts) as we forgive those who are indebted to us.” It is not enough to ask for forgiveness for our own personal sins. Jesus did not stop there. He went on to make it a condition for our forgiveness, that we forgive those who have offended us.

La cuarta petición del Padre Nuestro es: “Perdona nuestras ofensas como perdonamos a los que nos ofenden.” No es suficiente pedir perdón por nuestros pecados personales. Jesús no se detuvo allí. Además de esto, lo puso como condición de recibir nuestro perdón, eso de perdonar a los que nos ofenden.

The fifth petition of the Our Father is “And lead us not into temptation.” Tertullian (Op. cit.) says we should pray not only for the forgiveness of our sins, but also that we should completely shun them. We should not allow us to be led by the tempter, the devil. Christ himself was tempted by the devil and pointed out the devil is the subtle director of the temptation.

La quinta petición del Padre Nuestro es: “Y no nos dejes caer en la tentación.” Tertulio (Op. Cit.) nos dice que no solo hay que pedir perdón por nuestros pecados, sino que también debemos rechazarlos por completo. No debemos dejar que nos dirija el demonio. St James 1:13-15 says: “Let no one say when he is tempted, I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted with evil and he himself tempts no one; but each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin; and sin when it is full-grown bring forth death.”

Santiago 1:13-15 dice: “Cuando uno es tentado, no diga que es tentado de parte de Dios; porque Dios no puede ser tentado por el mal, ni Él tienta a nadie; si no que cada uno es tentado, cuando de su propia concupiscencia es atraído y seducido. Entonces la concupiscencia, después que ha concebido, da a luz el pecado; y el pecado, siendo consumado, da luz a la muerte.”

The Parable of Persistence was about how Jesus wants us to pray The Parable of Persistence was about how Jesus wants us to pray. Don’t give up easily, but persevere in prayer. St James (1:6-8) says we should ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.

For that person must not suppose that a double-minded man; unstable in all his ways, will receive anything from the Lord.” So don’t hedge. After all, the Lord said: “Ask, and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened” (Luke 11:9-10).

Para esa persona no debe suponer que un hombre de doble ánimo, inestable en todos sus caminos, que recibirá cosa alguna del Señor. Así es que no vaciles, porque el Señor dijo: “Pidan y se les dará, busquen y encontrarán, toquen y se les abrirá. Porque quien pide, recibe; quien busca; encuentra, y al que toca, se le abre” (Lucas 11:9-10).
