Steps for naming covalent compounds Unlike ionic compounds, naming covalent compounds requires prefixes. Step 1: The first element in the formula is always named first using the name of the atom. Example: S 2 O 3 Sulfur Step 2: The second element is named by dropping the ending and adding – ide. Oxygen oxide Step 3: Count how many of the first atom we have and how many of the second atom we have and add the correct prefix. Sulfur 2 Di disulfur Oxygen 3 tri trioxide Step 4: We combine the name of each element with the proper prefix. If there is only one of the first atom, then we do not have to write mono- in front of the element name. IUPAC Name: disulfur trioxide

Everybody Has Mono Remember when to use the prefix ‘mono’ When to use ‘mono’ Cuándo utilizar 'mono’ When there is only 1 atom of the second element in the chemical formula Cuando sólo hay 1 átomo del segundo elemento en la fórmula química Examples: CO N2ON2O NO H2OH2O
Naming Covalent Compounds Practice Answer the following questions in your notebook and raise your hand for a ‘Francois’ stamp when you are done with 5 of them! Ionic Bonds = no prefixes Covalent Bonds = USE PREFIXES 1. MgI 2 2. P 2 S 5 3. NaBr 4. K 2 SO 4 5. N 2 O 3 6. C 3 H 8 7. LiS 8. PbCl 4 9. AlPO 4 10. Ca 2 S
Responda a las siguientes preguntas en su cuaderno y levantar la mano para un "Francois" sello cuando haya terminado con 5 de ellos! Los enlaces iónicos = sin prefijos Los enlaces covalentes = PREFIJOS DE USO 1. MgI 2 2. P 2 S 5 3. NaBr 4. K 2 SO 4 5. N 2 O 3 6. C 3 H 8 7. LiS 8. PbCl 4 9. AlPO 4
