Tarea de ayer: (B) Yo quiero algún plato principal. Ellos escogen algunas manzanas. Él no quiere ninguno. Nosotros no necesitamos comer ningunos huevos.

O…o & ni…ni

O…o & ni…ni There are often several ways to translate these kinds of sentences. The main thing to remember is to not translate WORD for WORD but rather look at the WHOLE PICTURE. Be sure to match the NEGATIVE all through the sentence if necessary.

Ejemplos: We don’t want either the fish or the steak. No queremos ni el pescado ni el bistec. Ni queremos el pescado ni el bistec. No queremos el pescado ni el bistec.

Ejemplos: They are going to eat either the salad or the soup. Ellos van a comer o la ensalada o la sopa. Ellos van a comer la ensalada o la sopa.

Ejemplos: I pick neither the hamburger nor the shellfish. Yo no escojo ni la hamburguesa ni los mariscos. Yo ni escojo la hamburguesa ni los mariscos. Yo no escojo la hamburguesa ni los mariscos.

Pero & sino

Pero vs. Sino For Pero vs. Sino again it is important to look at the SENTENCE as a whole.

Use PERO if the first phrase is positive and second phrase contradicts it. They eat a lot of fish but don’t order it today. Ellos comen mucho pescado pero no lo piden hoy. I speak Spanish, but I want to learn French. Yo hablo español pero quiero aprender francés.

Use SINO if the first phrase is negative and second phrase contradicts it. They don’t like fish, but they try it today. A ellos no les gusta el pescado sino lo prueban hoy. I don’t choose the hamburger, but rather the steak. No escojo la hamburguesa sino el bistec.

Práctica: I need someone now. I don’t need anyone now. Yo necesito a alguien ahora. I don’t need anyone now. Yo no necesito a nadie ahora. We like to eat but we aren’t hungry now. Nos gusta comer pero no tenemos hambre ahora. Marco doesn’t try new things ever. Marco nunca/jamás prueba cosas nuevas. Marco no prueba cosas nuevas nunca/jámas.

Práctica: We want to order some french fries. Nosotros queremos pedir algunas papas fritas. We don’t to order any french fries. No queremos pedir ningunas papas fritas.
