Content Objective: I will learn how to use Affirmative and Negative Words in Spanish to talk about indefinite or negative situations. Language Objective: I will learn how to use Affirmative and Negative Words by taking notes and completing activities. (p.302) Sra. Lear Spanish 1

2 Affirmative Words Negative Words
When you want to talk about an indefinite or negative situation, you use an affirmative or a negative word. Affirmative Words Negative Words Algo (something) Nada (nothing) Alguien (someone) Nadie (no one) Algún/alguno/a (some) Algunos/algunas Ningún/ninguno/a (none, not any). Ningunos/Ningunas Siempre (always) Nunca (never) También (also) Tampoco (neither, either)

3 Example: For now, nothing more The waiter asks: ¿Algo de tomar?
Something to drink? -Por ahora, nada mas. For now, nothing more

4 The girls want some dessert, but Carlos doesn’t want any beverage.
Notice that alguno/a and ninguno/a must match the gender & number of the noun they modify. Example: Las chicas quieren algun postre, pero Carlos no quiere ninguna bebida. The girls want some dessert, but Carlos doesn’t want any beverage.

5 Carlos no quiere ningún postre.
If a verb is preceded by no, words that follow must be negative. A double negative is required in Spanish when no precedes the verb. Examples: No quiero nada. I don’t want anything. Carlos no quiere ningún postre. Carlos does not want any (of the desserts).

6 Las chicas nunca comen en casa.
However if a negative word, such as nunca or nadie comes before the verb, a second negative is not needed. Example: Nadie quiere postre. No one wants dessert. Las chicas nunca comen en casa. The girls never eat at home.
