3 GUSTAR: Tips and tricks
Remember, the trick to remembering how to use GUSTAR is to remember that you aren’t literally say “I like ____” but rather you are saying “ _______ is pleasing to me.” For this reason, what we think of in English as being the object, is actually working as the subject in the sentence and the verb must match it. The indirect object pronoun (IOP) is what you need to match to who is doing the liking.

4 Formula: [Who] Indirect Object Pronoun (IOP) [gustar] Gusta Or Gustan
[What] Infinitive Singular object or Plural object

5 Step #1: Indirect Object Pronouns (IOP’s)
Me – to me Nos – to us Te – to you (s. inf.) Os – to y’all (p. inf.) Le – to you (s. form.) Les – to you all (p. form.) Le – to him/her Les – to them (m./f.)

6 Gusta or gustan? Gusta matches up with… Gustan matches up with…
Infinitives Example: Me gusta nadar. = I like swimming. Singular objects Example: No te gusta el perro de Miguel. = You don’t like Miguel’s dog. Gustan matches up with… Plural objects Example: Nos gustan los libros. = We like the books.

8 Marker boards! I like books. He likes Spanish class.
Me gustan los libros. He likes Spanish class. Le gusta la clase de español. They like to eat breakfast. Les gusta desayunar. We like the classrooms. Nos gustan las aulas.
