The conditional and conditional perfect

Grammar Packet 5: Read p. 245 Do p. 246 activity A (subject in italics only) Read p. 247 Do p. 248 activity B

The Conditional Todos serían inmortales.

The Conditional Todos serían inmortales. Todos los muchachos sobrevivirían para siempre. Los veríamos crecer, hacerse hermosos, continuar jóvenes… …una ceremonia – que nosotros ya no veríamos – cuyo carácter religioso se haría evidente. Thinking about how we formed the future tense and looking at the examples above, how do you think we will form the conditional?

The Conditional We use the conditional to talk about things we would/could do. In English: I would like to go to a place where I could rest a lot. This is why in Spanish we have no direct translation for “would.” Instead it’s a separate conjugation.

The Conditional The Conditional is very similar to Future Tense. Leave the verb in infinitive. There is only one set of endings for all verbs: ía - íamos ías ía - ían

The Conditional There are irregulars, but they are the same ones we had in Future Tense. They will be exactly the same, but with Conditional endings: Poder – Podr Saber – Sabr Haber – Habr Querer - Querr Poner – Pondr Salir – Saldr Venir – Vendr Tener – Tendr Decir – Dir Hacer - Har

The Conditional We use the Conditional to express: What would happen if certain conditions were met. (Todos serían inmortales.) A past context to talk about an event that was anticipated for the future. (Los veríamos crecer, hacerse hermosos, continuar jóvenes y prepararse para la segunda inyección, una ceremonia – que nosotros ya no veríamos – cuyo carácter religioso se haría evidente.)

Tu amigo le faltó respeto a un anciano en la calle. The Conditional ¿Qué harías? Tu amigo le faltó respeto a un anciano en la calle.

No estudiaste para un examen importante. The Conditional ¿Qué harías? No estudiaste para un examen importante.

The Conditional ¿Qué harías? Dejaste tu cel en casa (y no te dabas cuenta hasta llegar a la escuela).

The Conditional We use the Conditional to express: Hypothetical situations. (Si yo tuviera el dinero, te lo daría. – If I had the money I would give it to you.) To form these you’ll use a “Si” clause (Si means “if” in this case) with the imperfect subjunctive, and the conditional in the second clause. Si + imperfect subjunctive, + conditional

Si fueras presidente de los EEUU… The Conditional ¿Qué harías? Si fueras presidente de los EEUU…

The Conditional ¿Qué harías? Si tuvieras $1,000,000…

The Conditional ¿Qué harías? Si hoy fuera sábado…

Si mañana fuera el fin del mundo… The Conditional ¿Qué harías? Si mañana fuera el fin del mundo…

The Conditional Perfect All of the PERFECT tenses start with haber: In the PRESENT perfect we conjugate haber in the PRESENT. In the PLUPERFECT (past perfect) we conjugate haber in the IMPERFECT (past tense). In the PRESENT perfect SUBJUNCTIVE and PLUPERFECT SUBJUNCTIVE we conjugate haber in the PRESENT SUBJUNCTIVE and IMPERFECT SUBJUNCTIVE. In the FUTURE perfect we conjugate haber in the FUTURE…

The Conditional Perfect In the CONDITIONAL perfect we conjugate haber in… THE CONDITIONAL!  HABER Yo habría Nosotros/as habríamos Tú habrías Él/Ella/Ud. Habría Ellos/Ellas/Uds. Habrían

This part will be COMPLETELY IDENTICAL to all other perfect tenses. The Conditional Perfect Just like ALL other perfect tenses, the second verb will just end in –ado/-ido OR you’ll use an irregular participle (dicho, puesto, vuelto, escrito, etc.) This part will be COMPLETELY IDENTICAL to all other perfect tenses.

Present perfect = “I have done” The Conditional Perfect Present perfect = “I have done” Pluperfect = “I had done” (before something else) Future perfect = “I will have done” Conditional perfect = ?

Conditional perfect = “Would have done” The Conditional Perfect Conditional perfect = “Would have done” “I would have done my homework, but I was tired.” Yo habría hecho la tarea, pero tenía sueño.

Yo habría hecho la tarea, pero… The Conditional Perfect Excuses, excuses! Finish these sentences explaining why you didn’t do these things: Yo habría hecho la tarea, pero…

Yo habría ido a tu fiesta, pero… The Conditional Perfect Excuses, excuses! Finish these sentences explaining why you didn’t do these things: Yo habría ido a tu fiesta, pero…
