Quasimodo: What is a subject? What is a verb? What is a direct object? What is a pronoun?

Tarea de viernes: You are going to the beach. Tú estás yendo a la playa. They are fleeing from the angry teachers. Ellos están huyendo de los maestros enojados. We are bringing chocolate. Nosotros estamos trayendo chocolate. You all are reading The Hunger Games. Ustedes están leyendo The Hunger Games. The reporter is saying things. El reportero está diciendo cosas.

Tarea de viernes: The cousins are coming now. Los primos están viniendo ahora. Your parents are not believing your story (cuento). Tus padres no están creyendo tu cuento. The teachers are chatting. Los maestros están charlando. The travelers are eating. Los viajeros están comiendo. You (s. inf.) are eating lunch. Tú estás almorzando.

Tarea de viernes: The students are studying. I am travelling. Los estudiantes están estudiando. I am travelling. Yo estoy viajando. You all (formal) are playing basketball. Ustedes están jugando al baloncesto.

What is a direct object? The object or person who the action is done to. It is the direct recipient of the action. Answers “What?” and “Whom?” Example: I buy the ball. I buy what? The ball – the ball is the D.O. They hugged Alicia. They hugged whom? Alicia – Alicia is the D.O.

Son las tres… Underline the subject 1 time. In the examples section: Underline the subject 1 time. Underline the verb 2 times. Circle the direct object.

Personal “a” In Spanish, if the Direct Object in a sentence is a person they put an “a” in front of their name. Examples: Yo abrazo (hug) a la niña. Ellos conocen (know) al maestro. Él golpea (hits) a Michael. This doesn’t have a translation into English, it is just something you need to do.

What is a pronoun? Replaces a noun. We already know our subject pronouns… Yo Nosotros Tú Vosotros Él/Ella/Usted Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes

What is a direct object pronoun? Instead of saying the direct object, you replace it with a direct object pronoun (DOP) Examples: I buy the ball.  I buy it. They hugged Alicia  They hugged her.

Los/las (you all formal) DOP in Spanish Me (me) Nos (us) Te (you s. inf.) Os (y’all) Lo/la (you s. formal) Los/las (you all formal) Lo/la (it/him/her) Los/las (them)

Ejemplos Objetos objetivos en español.

Examples in Spanish: Mi esposo abraza a mí Mi esposo me abraza.

Examples in Spanish: Ella hace las maletas. Ella las hace.

El gato está abrazando el pato. Examples in Spanish: El gato está abrazando el pato. El gato lo está abrazando. OR El gato está abrazándolo.

Caleb está bebiendo chocolate caliente. Caleb lo está bebiendo. OR Caleb está bebiéndolo.

In English… The DOP just replaces the noun and stays in the same place. I buy the hat.  I buy it. This order doesn’t work in Spanish so you CANNOT just direct translate the sentence.

FORMAT: 1 verb Affirmative sentences: Negative sentences: Drop the direct object. Place the direct object pronoun in front of the conjugated verb. Example: Yo lo compro. (I buy it.) Negative sentences: Drop the direct object. Place the direct object pronoun after the “no” and in front of the conjugated verb. Example: Yo no lo compro. (I don’t buy it)

2 verbs working together: Could be Present progressive or infinitive construction (ir+a+infinitive, querer+infinitive, etc.) Drop the direct object. Place the direct object pronoun in front of the conjugated verb Examples: Yo lo estoy comprando. (I am buying it) Yo lo quiero comprar. (I want to buy it)

or with 2 verbs you can… Examples: Drop the direct object. Stick the direct object pronoun to the end of the present participle or infinitive verb. NOTE: If you stick it to the PP you need to add an accent on the “e” of –iendo or the “a” of –ando Examples: Yo estoy comprándolo. (I am buying it) Yo quiero comprarlo. (I want to buy it)
