2 What’s a direct object? Pedro está comprando un coche.
A direct object receives the action of the verb directly, like a foot kicking the ball Ex: John is buying a car > a car is the direct object Pedro está comprando un coche.

3 The direct object pronoun
When do you use a direct object pronoun? When you don’t want to repeat the name of the direct object. Ex: I like this car. I am buying it. D.O D.O.P Me gusta este coche. La compro. D.O D.O.P

5 The Spanish Direct Object Pronouns
me [me] te [you] lo [him, it & masculine formal] la [her, it {f.}& feminine formal] nos [us] os [you informal] los [them & you masculine formal] las [them {f.} & you feminine formal]

6 Please note! In affirmative sentences, the direct object pronoun is generally placed before the conjugated verb Ex: No tienes tu libro porque yo lo tengo. In negative sentences, the direct object pronoun is placed between no and the conjugated verb. Ex: ¿Tienes mi libro? No, no lo tengo.

9 Your turn! Write 3 sentences using direct object nouns. Exchange your sentences with a partner , who will rewrite them using a direct object pronoun. Check on your partner’s work !

10 In the following sentences, change the direct object nouns into direct object pronouns. First identify the direct object in each sentence 1.Gustavo y Hector confirman las reservaciones. 2.nosotros leemos los folletos. Ana María estudia el mapa. Yo aprendo los nombres de los monumentos. Miguel escribe las direcciones para ir al hotel Esteban busca el pasaje. Nosotros planeamos una excursión.

11 Infinitive construction
Ex: Ir + infinitive In this case, the direct object pronoun can be placed before the conjugated form or attached to the infinitive. Ex: ellos van a escribir unas postales. ellos las van a escribir or ellos van a escribirlas.

12 Direct Object Pronouns & present progressive forms
Like with the infinitive construction, the direct object pronoun can be placed before estar in the present progressive construction or it can be attached to the present participle. Ex: ¿Los estudiantes están leyendo la lección? Sí, la están leyendo. Or Sí, están leyéndola. ¡Atención! When a direct object pronoun is attached to the present participle, an accent mark is added to maintain the proper stress.

I will alternate calling teams to ask questions [yes and no questions]. Onc a team knows the answer to the riddle, the team captain should raise his/her hand . If right, the team gets a point. We will play until one team has earned 3 points.

14 Una cosa más When a direct object noun in Spanish is a person or a pet, it is preceded by the word a. [there is no English equivalent] Ex : Don Francisco visita a la Señora Ramos. Don Francisco visita el hotel Prado. **In the first sentence, the personal a is required because the direct object is a person. In the second sentence, the personal a is not required because the direct object is a place, not a person.
