2 Parts of Speech Grammatically speaking, the verb (V) is the action in the sentence. The subject (S) is the doer of the action. The direct object (DO) is the recipient of the action. – To determine the DO, ask: what? Or who? Is being “verbed”

3 Examples of DOs in English I called Emily yesterday. He sent the letter. We ate the pizza. SV DO

4 Examples of DOPs in English We use pronouns to avoid repetition. – I called Emily yesterday. I called her yesterday. – He sent the letter. He sent it. – We ate the pizza. We ate it. S V DOP

5 How they work in Spanish… In Spanish, the direct object pronouns are placed IN FRONT OF the conjugated verb (which is still conjugated based on the subject). However, in a 2-verb situation, you can place the direct object pronoun before the conjugated verb, or attach it to the end of the infinitive. (DOPs can also be placed at the end on gerunds or commands, but we won´t be seeing these this quarter).
