2 What is an INDIRECT OBJECT?
It is who is receiving the action or who the action is being done to in the sentence. To find the indirect object, ask the questions: To whom? For whom?

3 Ejemplos María gave me the ball. To whom did she give the ball? to ME!
We bought Ana the present. For whom did we buy the present? For Ana!

4 What are INDIRECT OBJECT PRONOUNS??
Again, pronouns replace the noun. So, here is a list of some indirect object pronouns in English: me, you, her, him, them, us SPANISH INDIRECT OBJECT PRONOUNS… ME, TE, LE, NOS, OS, LES

ME = me (in English) TE = you (informal) LE = her, him, you (formal) NOS = us OS = ya’ll (Spain) LES = them, you all Me Nos ___________ Te Os Le Les

6 So, what about this GUSTA thing?
Let’s put it together! Me gusta el helado. This sentence means Ice-cream is pleasing to me. So, To Whom? is ice-cream pleasing? To ME! (The short way to say it is – I like ice-cream!)

7 Más Ejemplos Te gusta la música.
This sentence means – Music is pleasing to you. So, To Whom is Music pleasing? To YOU! (short way to say it – You like music!) But again, that te is the indirect object pronoun, & it is to whom the action is being done.

8 The Formula So, here’s the formula for the gusta sentences.
Indirect object pronoun + gusta + noun Me gusta la pizza. Nos gusta la comida mexicana.

9 PRÁCTICA! Me gusta el ajedrez. 2. te / la comida china
1. me / el ajedrez 2. te / la comida china 3. nos / el helado 4. os / la música Me gusta el ajedrez. Te gusta la comida china. Nos gusta el helado. Os gusta la música.

10 What about LE & LES? LE refers to him / her / & you (formal)
So, le gusta el fútbol can mean… Soccer is pleasing (to her), (to him) or (to you). The le form is rather ambiguous.

11 What about LE & LES? LES refers to them (boys) or them (girls) or you all (formal) LES is also ambiguous. For example, Les gusta el béisbol can mean… Baseball is pleasing (to them –boys), (to them – girls), or (to you all).

12 Clarify/Emphasize the Subject
So, to make it CERTAIN who you are referring to you, you need to add the preposition A & the person you are referring to. FORMULA: A + Subject + le /les + gusta + noun

13 EJEMPLOS A Ana le gusta el voléibol. (Volleyball is pleasing to Ana.)
A ella le gusta el voléibol. (Volleyball is pleasing to her.) A Ud. le gusta el voléibol. (Volleyball is pleasing to you.)

14 EJEMPLOS A Ana y María les gusta el voléibol.
(Volleyball is pleasing to Ana & María.) A ellas les gusta el voléibol. (Volleyball is pleasing to them.) A ustedes les gusta el voléibol.

15 GUSTAN When the noun that follows gustar is plural, then Gusta changes to GustaN. Me gustan los carros. Te gustan las fiestas. A él le gustan los deportes. A ellas les gustan las películas de amor. Nos gustan la música y el ajedrez.

16 IMPORTANTE Remember – It is the NOUN that follows GUSTA that causes gusta to change, NOT the words before it!!! A ellos les gusta el español. A ellos les gustan los carros.

17 Other Rules If you want to say that something is NOT pleasing. You put the word NO before the indirect object pronoun. No me gustan las verduras. A Juanita no le gusta la comida china.

18 To Ask Who? To Ask who is being talked about, start with ¿A quién… or ¿A quiénes… Ej: ¿A quién le gusta la pizza? A Juan le gusta la pizza. Ej: ¿A quiénes les gusta la pizza? A Juan y Jacob les gusta la pizza.

19 ¿Por qué? VS. Porque To ask WHY? - use ¿Por qué?
To answer with BECAUSE - use porque. ¿Por qué te gusta la comida mexicana? Porque es deliciosa. ¿Por qué no te gusta el ajedrez? Porque es aburrido.

20 A Ti Te Toca Juan likes soccer. We like pizza. They like parties.
Sofía y Alicia like volleyball. I don’t like vegetables.

21 Las Respuestas A Juan le gusta el fútbol. Nos gusta la pizza.
A ellos les gustan las fiestas. A Sofía y Alicia les gusta el voléibol. No me gustan las verduras.
