-mente

Big Idea Many languages have PREFIXES (which you can add to the beginning of a word to change its meaning) and SUFFIXES (which you can to the end of a word to change its meaning.) One of the most common suffixes in Spanish is –mente which is the equivalent of –ly in English.

Construction ADJECTIVES describe nouns. ADVERBS describe verbs. To make an adverb, we simply add –mente to the singular feminine form of an adjective.

Práctica ADJECTIVE ADJETIVO ADVERBIO ADVERB Fast Rápido Rápidamente Quickly Slow Lento Easy Fácil Sad Triste Happy Alegre

Práctica ADJECTIVE ADJETIVO ADVERBIO ADVERB Fast Rápido Rápidamente Quickly Slow Lento Lentamente Slowly Easy Fácil Fácilmente Easily Sad Triste Tristemente Sadly Happy Alegre Alegremente Happily

Más Práctica I normally watch bicycle racing (el ciclismo) on TV. The sportsman (el deportista) runs quickly. Ideally, we are going to the Olympic Games. Sadly, I don’t have time to exercise.

Más Práctica Yo normalmente miro el ciclismo en la televisión. El deportista corre rápidamente. Idealmente, nosotros vamos a los Juegos Olímpicos. Tristemente, yo no tengo tiempo para hacer ejercicio.

Demonstrative Adjectives

Demonstrative Pronouns

Aquí Practice I like those books more than this one. Me gustan esos libros más que éste. I like that class more than this one. Me gusta esa clase más que ésta. I don’t want those books. I want these ones. Yo no quiero esos libros. Quiero éstos. I don’t know those girls. I know these ones. Yo no conozco a esas chicas. Conozco a éstas.

Allá If we already know what noun we’re talking about, we can replace a demonstrative adjective and noun with a demonstrative pronoun: Aquel libro  aquél Aquella persona  aquélla Aquellos libros  aquéllos Aquellas personas  aquéllas

Allá Practice This man is taller than that one over there. Este hombre es más alto que aquél. This movie is worse than that one over there. Esta película es peor que aquélla. These books are more boring than those ones over there. Estos libros son más aburridos que aquéllos. These apples are better than those ones over there. Estas manzanas son mejores que aquéllas.

Preterite of ER/IR Verbs

Idea Grande If you have a normal ER or IR verb, this is the process to conjugate it in the preterite tense. This means it happened one time in the past. Good news – ER and IR verbs have the same endings in the preterite!

Ejemplos Aprender to learn aprend Beber to drink beb Comer to eat com Conocer to meet conoc Dividir to divide divid Encender to turn on encend Abrir to open abr Mover to move mov

Terminaciones í imos iste isteis ió ieron Endings Note: conocer normally means to know, but in the preterite it means to meet someone. í imos iste isteis ió ieron

Vivir Viví Vivimos Viviste Vivisteis Vivió Vivieron

Práctica Yo / leer Tú / encender Él / aprender Ella / imprimir Nosotros / compartir They moved We ate You drank I grew You divided
