2 Demonstrative adjectives DEMONSTRATE, which means “show.”

3 In English we use the demonstrative adjectives based on:
Demonstrative adjectives in English are simply the words: THIS / THAT / THESE / THOSE In English we use the demonstrative adjectives based on: 1) How close/far the item is from the speaker 2) How many items we are talking about The sweater (singular) is close to the speaker. Look at those boots. This sweater is on sale. The boots (plural) are farther away from the speaker.

4 Like all Spanish adjectives, demonstrative adjectives must agree in Gender + Number

5 Demonstrative adjectives go in front of the noun they are talking about ¿Quién donó esa comida?
Make sure the demonstrative adjectives agree with masculine/feminine + singular/plural Voy a ayudar a aquellas chicas. Me gusta trabajar en esta escuela. Este centro recreativo es muy divertido.

9 Demonstrative adjectives can also be used as pronouns to replace nouns
Demonstrative adjectives can also be used as pronouns to replace nouns. To distinguish them from demonstrative adjectives, they have a written accent. Es imposible trabajar para este gerente, pero me encantaría trabajar para ése. It is impossible for me to work for this manager, but I would love to work for that one.

10 No quiero esta manzana; quiero ésa.
The only difference between a demonstrative ADJECTIVE and a demonstrative PRONOUN in Spanish is the accent mark. If it’s a pronoun, there’ll be an accent mark over the first “e” in the word. **If there’s a noun after it, it’s an adjective; if there’s not, it’s a pronoun (put accent)** No quiero esta manzana; quiero ésa. I don’t want this apple; I want that one.

11 Like all Spanish adjectives, demonstrative pronouns must agree in Gender + Number

12 You would NEVER say, “Quiero ese uno” for “I want that one
You would NEVER say, “Quiero ese uno” for “I want that one.” You’d just say “Quiero ése.“ Quiero ese libro. Quiero ése. I want that book. I want that one. Quiero esos libros. Quiero ésos. I want those books. I want those. Quiero aquella silla. Quiero aquélla. I want that chair way over there. I want that one way over there. Quiero aquellas sillas. Quiero aquéllas. I want those chairs way over there. I want those way over there.

To express an idea or something that has not been identified, use the demonstrative pronouns: esto, eso, aquello Esto es ridículo. Eso es todo

Ése es un tucán de la selva amazónica. Aquél vive en Brasil, Colombia, y algunas partes de Perú.
