El Pretérito In Spanish 2 you learned to talk about the past using the preterite tense for actions that began and ended at a definite time. Example: Ana cantó a la fiesta anoche. Ana sang at the party last night. (Completed Past Action)

El Imperfecto The imperfect tense is another way to talk about the past. We use it to describe actions without any indication of their beginning or end. It is used to describe actions that were ongoing, repeated, or simultaneously occuring in the past.

El Imperfecto Example: Ana cantaba. Ana was singing. (No indication of beginning or end.) We use the imperfect to talk about actions that happened repeatedly in the past. In English we often say “used to” or “would” to express this idea.

El Imperfecto Examples Generalmente caminaban mucho. Generally they would walk a lot. Jugaban con otros niños de la familia. They used to play with other children in the family.

El Imperfecto Expressions such as generalmente, a menudo, muchas veces, todos los días, siempre, and nunca are clue words that can cue us to use the imperfect.

El Imperfecto The imperfect is also used for description or details such as time, weather, age. Example: Eran las doce y hacía mucho calor. It was twelve o’clock and it was very hot.

AR Verbs in the Imperfect Yo caminaba Tú caminabas Él Ella caminaba Usted Nosotros caminábamos Ellos Ellas caminaban Ustedes ***Notice the accent mark on the nosotros form of the verb.

El Imperfecto Since the yo and él/ella/usted forms are the same, we often use the subject pronouns to avoid confusion.

ER/IR Verbs in the Imperfect Comer (ER verb) Yo comía Tú comías Él Ella comía Usted Nosotros comíamos Ellos Ellas comían Ustedes ***Accent marks all the way through on “i” in ER/IR verbs.

ER/IR Verbs in the Imperfect Vivir (IR verb) Yo vivía Tú vivías Él Ella vivía Usted Nosotros vivíamos Ellos Ellas vivían Ustedes ***Accent marks all the way through on “i” in ER/IR verbs.

Irregular Verbs in the Imperfect There are only 3 irregular verbs in the imperfect. These are the verbs IR (to go), SER (to be), and VER (to see).

IR (to go) Yo iba Tú ibas Él Ella iba Usted Nosotros íbamos Ellos (notice the accent here) Ellos Ellas iban ustedes

SER (to be) Yo era Tú eras Él Ella era Usted Nosotros éramos Ellos (notice the accent here) Ellos Ellas eran ustedes

VER (to see) Yo veía Tú veías Él Ella veía Usted Nosotros veíamos Ellos Ellas veían ustedes NOTE – Accent all the way through on “I”

El Imperfecto The imperfect form of hay (there is/are) is había (there was/were, there used to be) Example: Generalmente no había muchos participantes en el campeonato.

Práctica del Paquete – Conjuga los verbos en el imperfecto: Tú recoger Yo marearse Él ser Uds. Reunirse Ud. Merendar Nosotros ir Ellos ver Uds. mantener Tú recogías Yo me mareaba Él era Uds. se reunían Ud. Merendaba Nosotros íbamos Ellos veían Uds. mantenían
