Past Tense There are two past tenses in Spanish: the Imperfect
the Preterite

Use the imperfect tense to talk about actions that happened repeatedly in the past.
Example: Rafael patinaba y Mónica corría. (Rafael used to skate and Monica used to run.)

Imperfect Tense yo -aba tú vosotros él, ella ellos, ellas -aban
-AR verbs: Drop the –AR and add the following endings: yo -aba nosotros -ábamos tú -abas vosotros -abais usted, él, ella ustedes, ellos, ellas -aban

Cantar – to sing yo cantaba nosotros cantábamos tú cantabas vosotros
cantabais usted, él, ella ustedes, ellos, ellas cantaban

Hay (there is or there are) is from the verb haber. In the imperfect, the verb is Había (there was or there were).
