Gramática 2

Today we will learn about the things that we like and the things we do not like.

Actually, the verb gustar does not translate well into English. Por ejemplo: Me gusta el libro. In English, we would say, "I like the book." but the meaning is really closer to... "The book pleases me"

Me gusta el café Coffee pleases me

Using the verb GUSTAR (to like) -The verb gustar means "to like" but literally translates as "to be pleasing“ - Because of it's literal translation we dont't conjugate gustar like other verbs -Gustar will use a special “indirect object pronoun” in front (me, te, le, nos, les)

Here is a very useful thing to remember: In Spanish, we don't say "I like it." Instead, we say, "It pleases me.“ The verb is GUSTAR, and for the "me" in English, we use the Spanish word me. Me is one of the indirect object pronouns in Spanish. Try saying the Spanish sentence below about 20 times, right now, to get the hang of it: Coffee pleases me. Me gusta el café. Then say the following 20 times, as well: No me gusta la espinaca. Spinach does not please me.

Indirect object pronouns Subject pronouns Indirect object pronouns Yo Tú él ella usted Nosotros Nosotras ellos ellas ustedes Me Nos Te Le Les

me goes with yo te goes with tú le goes with él, ella, usted nos goes with nosotros/as les goes with ellos/as, ustedes

Help me out with this… _____ gusta la casa (I like the house.) _____ gusta la silla (He likes the chair.) _____ gusta el cuarto (You (i) like the room.) _____ gusta el hotel (We like the hotel)

Gustar will agree with the thing/s you like, not the person liking it Me gusta la naranja (I like the orange) Me gustan los perros (I like dogs)

Ejemplos Me gusta el concierto. Le gustan los conciertos. Nos gusta el concierto.

The verb is conjugated to agree with the subject of the sentence. ¡OJO! The verb is conjugated to agree with the subject of
the sentence. With gustar the subject is the thing or things you like Use gusta if the thing you like is singular. Me gusta el libro (The book pleases me) Use gustan if the things you like are plural. Me gustan los tacos (Tacos please me)

Más ayuda porfavor… Les _______ los relojes (They all like the clocks.) Me ______ las verduras. (I like the vegetables) Le _______ el beisbol.

Ejemplos: No me gusta el pollo. (I don’t like chicken.) To say someone does not like something, or does
not like to do something use “no” before the
phrase Ejemplos: No me gusta el pollo. (I don’t like chicken.) No me gusta estudiar.

¡OJO! Who likes the chair? Le gusta la silla.

For purpose of clarification.. The sentence may begin with
a clarifying prepositional phrase: A él le gusta la pizza. A ella le gustan las papas fritas con ketchup. A usted le gusta el chocolate.
