In English, the equivalent is “to like” En español gustar significa “to be pleasing”

2 Gustar & Similar Verbs Por ejemplo:
In English we say: “I like Spanish.” En español decimos: “To me, Spanish is pleasing.”

3 Gustar & Similar Verbs To say what people like in Spanish, we use the verb gustar. This verb literally means to be pleasing. So instead of saying, “I like pizza,” you would say “Pizza is pleasing to me.”

4 I like the beach. In English: “I” is the subject “like” is the verb
“the beach” is the direct object En español: “the beach” is the subject “to please” is the verb “me” is the indirect object

5 The word order is actually reversed:
En Español…: The word order is actually reversed: The indirect object comes first: Me Then the verb: gusta Finally the subject of the verb: la playa. To make the sentence negative, simply add the word “no” at the beginning, before the pronoun. -No me gusta la playa.

6 Put the word no before the pronoun to say don’t or doesn’t.
1. No me gusta la tarea. 2. (A él) No le gusta correr. -However, you CAN’T use “encantar” with a negative sentence; you MUST use “gustar”. No me encanta la música. (encantar) No me gusta nada la música. (encantar) ✔

Who is doing the “liking”? Indirect Object Pronouns: 1. Me gusta(n) 2. Te gusta(n) 3. Le gusta(n) 4. Nos gusta(n) 5. Os gusta(n) 6. Les gusta(n)

8 Gustar & Similar Verbs “Gusta” = singular nouns = infinitives
“Gustan” = plural nouns * -er/-ir verbs: -e (Sing.) -en (plural)

9 When you use “gusta(n)” and “encanta(n)” to talk about a noun, always include the article: el/la, los/las. Me gusta el té. Me gustan las fresas.

10 Gustar & Similar Verbs Notice the “n” in parenthesis following gusta. This is because if “the thing” that is being liked is plural you must add an “n”. Me gusta el carro. Nos gustan los carros. Les gustan las frutas. Le gusta la fruta.

11 Gustar & Similar Verbs When gusta is followed by a verb, the verb must be in the infinitive form. (-ar-er-ir) - Me gusta jugar el béisbol. - ¿Te gusta escribir? - No nos gusta hacer las tareas.

3. Nos encant_ leer “Alejandro.” 4. A ellos no les (encantar) la comida mexicana.

13 Gustar & Similar Verbs Notice that le can stand for you (usted), he, she, it, and les can stand for you all (Uds.) or they. To clarify who is being talked about, use: A + name or (subject pronoun.) A Juan le gustan las pizzas. A Juan y a Sara les gusta la pizza. A usted le gusta comer. A ellos no les gustan las pizzas.

¿Cómo se dice? “I like coffee.” (A mí) Me gusta el café. “Coffee is pleasing to me.”

¿Cómo se dice? “You like cars.” (A tí) Te gustan los carros. “Cars are pleasing to you.”

18 ¿Cómo se dice? “He doesn’t like to dance.” A él no le gusta bailar.
“To dance is not pleasing to him.”

19 “Our teachers are pleasing to us.”
¿Cómo se dice? “We like the teachers.” Nos gustan los profesores. “Our teachers are pleasing to us.”

Me gusta estudiar. (A Elena) le gusta ver la televisión. No nos gusta hacer la tarea. (A Carlos y a Miguel) les gustan los carros. ¿A Uds. les gusta mirar fotos? Te encanta ir de compras, ¿verdad?
