Essential ?s: how do you compare things and how do you express extremes?

 When you compare, you are looking usually at two things or people  They can have qualities that are different (comparisons of inequalities) or qualities that they share (comparisons of equailities)

 Whether you are comparing characteristics or things that the people have to say one has more than the other or is greater in the characteristic, use:  (thing 1) (verb) más (thing or trait) que (thing 2)  Carlos es más alto que Juan.  Karla es más alta* que Juana.  Carlos tiene más carros que Juan.

 When one has less than the other or is lesser in a trait, use:  Menos ____ que  (Thing 1) (verb) menos (thing/trait) que (thing 2)  Jim es menos estudioso que Kate.  Yo tengo menos hermanos que Kim.

 When it is an action that someone does more or less than the other:  Más que/menos que  Mi hermano estudia más que yo.  Yo estudio menos que mi hermano.

 There are a couple of times that you do not use más or menos  Age: mayor que (older than), menor que (younger than)  Yo soy mayor que mis estudiantes.  Mis estudiantes son menores que yo.  To say better (mejor que) or worse (peor que)  Mi casa es mejor que tu casa.  Carlos saca mejores notas que Juan.  Never say or write más mejor or más mayor

 When you say ‘more than’ or ‘less than’ a number, use:  Más de  Tengo más de 7000 canciones en mi computadora.  Hay más de 20 estudiantes en la clase, pero menos de 30.  Vi esa película más de una vez.

 This is when you say in English ‘as ____ as’ or ‘as much as’ or ‘as many/much _____ as  To say ‘as _____ as’:  Tan (characteristic) como  Soy tan guapo como Enrique Iglesias.  Carlos es tan alto como Brian.

 To say ‘as much/many _____ as’  Tanto/tanta/tantos/tantas ____ como  Tengo tantos hermanos como mi esposa.  Tengo tantas clases como otros maestros  Carlos tiene tanto tiempo para hacer la tarea como Juan.  To say ‘as much as’ (no trait)  Tanto como  Carlos estudia tanto como Juan.

 One easy way is equal to saying ‘really’ or ‘very’ ______  Use suffix –ísimo  Buenísimo  Facilísimo  Aburridísimo

 The other way you do this is to say the best/worst/___est  It is just like English, using the word “the”  El/la/los/las más/menos (characteristic)  Carlos es el más inteligente (de la clase)  Add the last part to specify out of what group  La más interesante de mis clases es español.  Soy el más alto de mi familia.

 The best: el/la mejor, los/las mejores  ¿Quién es el mejor estudiante?  The worst: el/la peor, los/las peores  Para mí, la clase de inglés es la peor  The oldest: el/la mayor, los/las mayores  Yo soy el mayor de todos mis hermanos  The youngest: el/la menor, los/las menores  Los menores de las familias muchas veces son mimados.
