Kindergarten Corner What We’re Learning… Reading: Students will continue working in small groups to practice letter/sound recognition, sight word recognition, and reading strategies. Classes will listen to and chorally read aloud many stories as we discuss the important elements in them, such as characters, setting, and events. Your child will learn to act out and retell the sequence of stories, especially different versions of the Gingerbread Man, as well as hear and repeat the rhyming words within the refrains. We will even learn to compare and contrast them. (SOL K.9f, g; K.4b; and K.1b, d) Writing: Your child is now beginning to use letter sounds to stretch out words to write them in their stories. We are beginning to see short sentences at the bottom of their writing as we learn to write left to right. Students will study the small-moment writing of famous authors, such as Tomie dePaola, Ezra Jack Keats, and Mo Willems, and learn how to write like them. (SOL K.12 a, c, d) Math: Classes will continue a patterns unit this month. Students are learning to identify, describe, extend, compare, and create patterns. We are observing patterns of colors, shapes, pictures, and rhythm while also identifying their repeating core/unit. (SOL K.15, K.16) Science/Social Studies: Students will extend their understanding of the five senses as they explore those of taste, touch, smell, sight, and hearing. We will perform many experiments to help observe our daily use of our sensory organs. Your child will be very excited to use their 5 senses as we go on a real-life Gingerbread Man hunt! As we approach the holiday season, students will also learn to recognize and compare wants versus needs (water, food, shelter, clothing, and air). Your child will learn that people work to earn money to buy the things they want. (Science SOL K.1, K.2 & Social Studies SOL K.7 a, b) December 2015 Wow! We can’t believe it’s already December and half way through the 2 nd quarter! It’s wonderful to see how much our classes have already learned over these past few months. We enjoyed seeing many of you again at conferences last month to discuss the amazing progress everyone is making. Our classes are very excited as the winter season quickly approaches us! We have so many fun activities and units of study planned for this month, like Gingerbread! We know the classes will have a blast! We wish everyone an early happy and safe holiday season!
