LOS PRONOMBRES Pronouns in Spanish

¿QUÉ ES UN PRONOMBRE? A subject pronoun replaces a noun that is doing the action of a verb. Ejemplo: Sr. James talks to the students. Sr. James sees them in the hall. Sr. James cares about his students. Sr. James disciplines his students. In these sentences, we can replace “Sr. James” with “He,” since we know who we are talking about and who is doing the action. “He” is a subject pronoun.

LOS PRONOMBRES SingularPlural 1 st person Yo = INosotros = we (all male or mixed group) Nosotras = we (all females) 2 nd person Tú = you (familiar / informal) Vosotros = all of you(Spain) Vosotras = all of you (all females) 3 rd person Él = he Ella = she Usted (Ud.) = you (formal) Ellos = they (all male or mixed) Ellas = they (all female) Ustedes (Uds.) = all of you

HELPFUL HINTS 1.If you are talking about someone, use he or she as the pronoun. 2.If you are talking to someone, use you as the pronoun. 3. You can be singular or plural. If the you is one person, use tú or usted (Ud.) If the you is a group of people, use ustedes (Uds.). 4.If you are talking about a group of people but you are not one of the group, use they. If you are talking about a group of people and you are part of the group, use we. 5.If the we or they is a group of only males or mixed male and female, use nosotros or ellos. If the we or they is a group of only females, use nosotras or ellas.

VOSOTROS/VOSOTRAS Vosotros(as) and ustedes (Uds.) both have the same meaning. The difference is that vosotros(as) is only used in Spain. All other Spanish-speaking countries use ustedes to imply “y’all.”

PLURAL SUBJECT PRONOUNS With plural subject pronouns, remember that if there is one guy in the group, no matter how many women, use the masculine form. Ejemplo: Pablo y Natasha - Ellos son alumnos ambiciosos. Sometimes you will see multiple nouns and subject pronouns together. Any time that “yo” is included in a group, use the “nosotros(as)” form. Ejemplo: Maya, Miguel y yo - Nosotros somos inteligentes. If you were to see “tú, Ud. or Uds.” and “yo” is NOT included, use the “Uds.” form. Ejemplo: Tú, Maya y Miguel. – Ustedes son simpáticos.
